Today, we’re celebrating a very special friend of The Midnight Mission. Happy Birthday, Phil Zacheretti!

For many years, Phil has been an incredibly generous supporter of our mission, giving not only through his generosity, but through his time, commitment, and willingness to show up when it matters.

His support was especially meaningful at this year’s Golden Heart Awards, where he did so much to help make the evening a success.

Clare’s legacy is living on in every new beginning.

With the generous support of Jim Ellinger, The Midnight Mission was able to take an important step toward opening the Clare E. Women’s Recovery Center on our third floor, creating a place where women can find healing, hope, community, and a path forward.
This year, we witnessed an incredible milestone as eight women became the first graduating class of our Women’s Recovery Program.

Recovery takes courage, but it also takes community. It takes people who believe in second chances and are willing to invest in the possibility of a new life.

Thank you, Jim, for helping us honor Clare’s legacy in a way that will continue changing lives for years to come.

A huge thank you to the USC students of Alpha Epsilon Delta, USC’s premier premedical honor society, for making and donating 400 sandwiches to The Midnight Mission.

These future healthcare professionals are already showing what it means to care for others and serve their community. Every sandwich helps us provide nourishment, dignity, and connection to our neighbors in need.

Recovery changes everything.

At The Midnight Mission’s Recovery Graduation, we witnessed what that change looks like: lives transformed, families reconciled, relationships restored, and hope renewed.

This year, 27 men and, for the first time in The Midnight Mission’s history, eight women graduated from our Recovery Program.

Each graduate walked across that stage carrying a story of courage, perseverance, and a new beginning. Behind every diploma is the hard work of recovery and a community that believed change was possible.

This is only the beginning of what we have to share.

In the coming days, we’ll be sharing more photos, videos, and stories from this unforgettable celebration, including the voices of our graduates and the journeys that brought them to this moment.

Meet Your Neighbor: Byron

At 72 years old, Byron does not have a home of his own. Some nights, friends give him a safe place to sleep. During the day, The Midnight Mission is one of the places he knows he can turn to, including something as simple, but important, as having a place to receive his mail.

Recently, a health challenge left Byron struggling with significant pain. Managing prescriptions and keeping track of his care became another responsibility to carry while navigating life without stable housing.

Byron’s story is a reminder that homelessness is rarely just about not having a place to live. It can mean trying to manage your health, your belongings, your mail and the everyday responsibilities of life without the stability many of us take for granted.

At The Midnight Mission, we are grateful to be one small part of Byron’s community, offering a place where he can stay connected and know he is not alone.

The people on the frontlines of homelessness services need to be part of the conversation about what comes next.

Georgia Hawley, Chief Community Officer of The Midnight Mission, and President & CEO David Prentice joined the Greater LA Coalition on Homelessness meeting to ask important questions about the new Los Angeles County Department of Homeless Services and Housing and how it will work alongside providers serving our communities every day.

As this new department takes shape, open communication and genuine partnership with frontline service providers will be essential. Those working directly with our neighbors bring valuable experience and perspective about what is happening on the ground and what is needed to create meaningful, lasting solutions.

The Midnight Mission is grateful to have a seat at the table, to share our experience, and to help ensure the voices of providers and the people we serve are part of shaping the future of homeless services in Los Angeles.

Recovery gave Edgar something he thought he had lost: hope.

When Edgar came to The Midnight Mission, addiction had taken so much from his life. Recovery gave him the opportunity to begin again.

Tomorrow, Edgar will stand alongside his fellow graduates, each with a different story, but all connected by the courage it took to keep going.
