One of the most expensive assumptions a law firm can make about cybersecurity is that having the right tools means the environment is mature.
But MFA can be enabled while old access quietly remains in place.
Backups can run every night without anyone knowing how long a real recovery would take.
Security software can generate alerts without the firm knowing who is responsible for acting on them.
AI can be available to attorneys before anyone has established where sensitive client information should and should not go.
The tools may all be legitimate.
The question is how deliberately they are being managed.
That is why we use a four-stage cybersecurity framework with law firms.
At the earlier end, security tends to be driven by problems as they appear. As maturity increases, the environment becomes more documented, monitored, planned, and connected to the firm’s actual risks and priorities.
Eventually, cybersecurity stops being a collection of technical controls and becomes part of how the firm makes decisions about growth, client service, insurance, access, and new technology.
