Ever wondered where your recycling goes? 🤔
Feeling skeptical—or just curious to learn more?
This post is for YOU! ♻️
After it’s picked up from your home, Jefferson County’s recycling is taken to Smurfit Westrock for sorting and processing. And here’s something you might not know—they offer public tours so you can see the process for yourself!
kNOw Waste hosts a guided tour once a month from March–November, and we’d love for you to join us.

Two more days to take our survey! We'll stop taking responses after June 7. Thanks!

This survey will offer Public Works and the Waste Management District insight into Louisville residents' opinions on the effects, prevalence, and consequences of littering, and litter prevention and abatement efforts. https://louisvilleky.gov/government/louisville-litter-perception-survey

♻️ Recycling Q&A at Portland Library
🗓 Saturday, June 20
Join us for a free, open-to-the-public discussion-style class where you can ask all your questions about Louisville’s recycling—where it goes, what can be recycled, and how to recycle right!
🚛 Touch-a-Truck at Jeffersontown Library
🗓 Tuesday, June 30 | ⏰ 10–11 AM
Come explore our trucks up close and learn more about how we keep our city running!
🚛 Touch-a-Truck at Fairdale Library

🍦 kNOw Waste Wednesday: Ice Cream Cartons 🍦

Love a good scoop? Here’s what to do with the carton when you’re done:

✅ Yes — paper ice cream cartons ARE accepted in recycling!
Even though they feel like cardboard, they have a thin plastic lining to keep your ice cream from leaking – and that’s okay for recycling. (The all-plastic containers are accepted too - but they could be reused!)

♻️ Quick tips before you recycle:
• Empty it completely (no leftover ice cream!)
• Give it a quick rinse if needed
• Toss it in your recycling bin (recycle the lid too!)

🚫 Skip the landfill when you can! Small actions like recycling everyday items help reduce waste and keep valuable materials in use.

kNOw Waste Wednesday! ♻️
If your recycling got picked up, it doesn’t automatically mean it was done correctly. Crews keep routes moving and aren’t able to check every container.
From time to time, our team performs contamination audits and leaves tags to help you recycle better. The top contaminant is plastic bags and wrap!
✅ Want to get it right every time?
✔ Use our Recycle Coach app or go to www.louisvilleky.gov/RecycleCoach
