***Scam Alert***

Lubbock, those scammers are still out there! One of our local firefighters was called by a scammer this month and was kind enough to record the call so we could share it. This is a pretty typical example of a scam call here in our area. The full audio was over 13 minutes long and was covered in red flags. They included:

🚨The wrong agency name
🚨Fake judge names
🚨Withholding common information (supervisor name/rank/court address)
🚨References to the wrong county
🚨Legal terms used incorrectly
🚨Threats of immediate arrest
🚨Telling you not to contact anyone about the call
🚨Demanding you handle the issue with them right now

Remember: the LSO will not call you and demand a payment. We do not accept payment in bitcoin, cashapp, venmo, gift cards, or at any location that is not county-owned. We will not call you for jury duty or a warrant. We will not tell you to drive down to the Sheriff’s Office immediately. We do not offer discounts on bail bonds or court fees and we do not charge for ankle monitors. You can find infomration on all local scams on our app.

We were honored to have Sgt. Hassell speak at Breakfast with Champions, a fundraiser for Special Olympics of Texas, this morning! Sgt. Hassell has been a fixture within the Law Enforcement Torch Run here in the West Texas Region. She helps plan events for Special Olympics and gathers volunteers to support athletes.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for the Special Olympics. Law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes work together to carry the Flame of Hope during local, state, national, and world Special Olympics events.
