Cleaning your outdoor AC condenser coils with water is an excellent way to maintain your system during peak cooling season. But before you grab the hose, make sure you're doing it safely.

Follow these 5 simple steps:

1. Turn off the power at the outdoor disconnect or main electrical panel.
2. Use a regular garden hose, never a damaging pressure washer.
3. Spray from the top down in a gentle, back-and-forth motion.
4. Avoid the electrical box and the fan motor housing completely.
5. Turn the power back on (and expect a slight time delay before it starts).
6. Keep your cooling system happy and your energy bills down!
