Join our own Kate Burkhart and the Center for Law and Social Policy for Equity Matters: Addressing Gender-Based Violence and Harassment as a Workplace Safety Issue

Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2026 from 1 pm - 2:30 pm

CLASP’s first Equity Matters conversation of 2026 will focus on gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in the workplace, examining how we should change systems and asking this fundamental question: what would it take to design workplaces where violence cannot thrive?

Featured Speakers:
•Robin Runge – Director, Domestic Violence Law Clinic, University of Oregon School of Law
•Lark Jackson – Director, Equity Resource Center, Chicago Women in Trades
•Kate Burkhart – Director, Bureau of Labor Standards, Maine Department of Labor
•Elyse Shaw – Director, Education, Worker, and Labor Justice, CLASP (moderator)

Among the issues these and other experts will explore:
•What it means to build a workplace safety ecosystem capable of preventing GBVH
•Equity-focused campaigns and programming that addresses GBVH
•Centering the voices and advocacy of workers and unions

The High Performance Building Systems & Practices Pre-Apprenticeship Program, run by passivhausMAINE, is accepting applications for their 2nd cohort!

This state-certified program provides FREE hands-on training and exposure to careers and employers in Maine's vibrant high-performance, energy-efficient building industry.

The program was built with flexibility in mind — designed to make it possible for students and full-time workers to participate.

Pre-Apprentices benefit from:
• Flexible monthly in-person or repeat virtual sessions (50% in person attendance required - in Freeport, ME)
• Field trips to visit industry builders and designers (attendance at 4/6 visits required - statewide)
• Stipend support to reduce participation barriers (if needed)
• Direct industry connections and career pathway opportunities

Women and young adults are encouraged to apply as part of the effort to build a more inclusive and representative workforce in Maine’s construction and green building sectors.

✅ The application is quick and easy and available on the program website. We encourage interested individuals — and those who know someone who may be a good fit — to apply today.
