In honor of Juneteenth today and this celebration of freedom, culture, and black excellence, we're lifting up how the Madison Common Council chose to recognize five Black youth leaders at their annual Juneteenth recognition this month. Common Council President Sabrina Madison highlighted local youth (and two adult leaders) for their ongoing impact in their communities. One of Rooted's longtime Youth Employees, Dahjenae Lavell, was among those recognized, along with youth from Bridge Lake Point Waunona Neighborhood Center, The House Inc., Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. We're proud of Dahjenae and the other Black youth leaders, and recognize their commitment to excellence this Juneteenth!

Introducing our next A Summer Night's Dream chef: Tory Miller!
Tory is a 2012 recipient of the James Beard Award Best Chef: Midwest. He's strived to strengthen Madison’s food system, local agriculture, and wider community throughout his career by supporting farmers and purchasing local Wisconsin products for all his restaurants, notably forming the Madison Area Chefs Network to unite Madison’s local chefs for the first time. When he is not working in one of his restaurants, Tory is spending time with his family, passing along his love of all things delicious to his kids. You can find Tory at L'Etoile Restaurant and Graze.
We're so excited to have Tory back again this year for A Summer Night's Dream!

With the end of the school year we wrapped up our "I Grew That" project for the semester. Our 4th graders spent some time outside on the farm planting the lettuce they grew from seed in their classrooms. Our 5th grade students sold the marigolds they grew at our annual spring plant sales, and chose local nonprofits to donate the proceeds to. The Lori Mann Carey Elementary School 5th graders chose Operation Fresh Start, and the Kennedy Elementary School 5th graders chose We Got This Milwaukee -- donating $515!

We are so proud of all the students who participated in the "I Grew That" project this year, and commend them for generously helping other Wisconsin youth grow food for their community. The "I Grew That" project is in partnership with the USDA's NIFA program.

On MMSD's last day of school, we wrapped up our Gardener in Residence programming at Aldo Leopold Elementary School. This winter & spring, students got to learn new things and spend some quality time outside! In the classroom we made seed catalogue collages, learned about seed saving/viability testing, and cooked up some fried dandelions. When it warmed up, the students ventured outside to draw garden maps, make bird feeders, pull up invasive plants, paint signs to label raised beds, and make spring rolls. They all found their love for weeding, planting, and watering as well. Even with all of these fun activities, the most favorite was still eating chives by the handful right out of the garden!

We're excited to introduce our chef line-up for A Summer Night's Dream, starting with Chef Yusuf Bin-Rella! Farms Yusuf is a longtime collaborator with Rooted, and is a Troy Farm Collaborative grower in addition to being a chef. After a trip to Africa in 2019, Yusuf returned to Madison on a mission to grow and connect people through food of the African diaspora. On his plot of land at Troy Farm, he primarily grows collard greens. Yusuf joins a growing group of urban farmers across the county fighting for food equity and social justice. Through his signature collard greens, he shares his culture and aims to heal the community. We're grateful to have Yusuf with us once again for A Summer Night's Dream to share his talents and his passion for food and farming! We hope you'll join us: https://rootedwi.org/summer-nights-dream/

This spring we have three graduating seniors in our youth employment program who have been part of the Badger Rock family since their first day of 6th grade. As they are concluding their time in high school and as Rooted Youth Employees, we're celebrating everything they have done and all they will go on to do!

Henry Forehand, heading to UW Stevens Point (to study agriculture!)
Diego Miranda-Naxi, heading to UW Madison
Dahjenae Lavell, heading to Edgewood University

All of them have brought so much to this place and this community, and we know they will continue to make the world a better place no matter where they go!

Rooted would like to express our sorrow at the sudden loss of Michael Johnson, President and CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County (BGCDC). Michael’s work on behalf of youth across our community has been tremendous and his presence will be greatly missed.

For those of us who operate Neighborhood Centers, we collectively have felt the impact Michael has had. He joined us as we came together to advocate for consistent funding for city-funded neighborhood centers. It was his efforts to secure funding for BGCDC that highlighted the need for all of us to come together, which resulted in the forming of a Neighborhood Center Coalition. His staff joined us and collectively we created a tiered system of funding that serves all of us equitably.

His work to create multiple pathways for youth is inspirational and his advocacy for families resonates with us as we know our youth can’t succeed if their families are not successful.

It is hard to imagine a world without Michael, his gift to turn losses into giving and to reach across the aisle of indifference to form partnerships and move the needle on important issues. We send our condolences to his family and the staff of BGCDC and to everyone who shares the grief our community is feeling at this moment.

Earlier this spring, Rooted team members Brian Emerson and Forrest Smart presented a webinar about their work on seed saving with youth, hosted by the School Garden Support Organization Network. They discussed selecting resilient, educational crops, and provide hands-on activities to spark curiosity and connect students to stewarding the full life cycle of plants. If you want to learn more about seed saving, you can watch the full webinar anytime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5yMIkO3j2A
