Dignora is a regular participant in our beginner ESL classes at the CMC. When we asked her why she is so driven to come to class, she let us know that she wants to learn English for a better quality of life in the US. She believes improving her English skills will make for better relationships, better communication at work, and a better experience at the hospital.

Dignora shared that the class, teachers, and students are beautiful. Practicing conversation and writing is helpful, and the teachers being able to interpret is supportive. Thank you for being a valuable part of our classes, Dignora!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Welcome to a new role, Lynn! 🌟

We’re thrilled to officially introduce Lynn as our new Food Programs Coordinator! Many of you already know her from our Culinary Creations program, and we are so lucky to have her stepping in to oversee our food pantry and free meal programs.

We also want to send a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to Antonio, our recently retired manager, for his years of love and dedication. Lynn shares, "Antonio cared for each and every individual. I hope that someday I can be the person that people feel just as comfortable coming to for help."

Lynn took the reins on July 1st and immediately proved she works great under pressure—expertly juggling a bustling pantry and covering the meal program her very first week!

A few fun facts about Lynn's first month:

- She loves connecting: Though initially a bit intimidated by language barriers, she quickly found that connecting with our guests is the absolute best part of the job.

- She appreciates our helpers: She has been blown away by our volunteers, noting, "They are awesome, and we absolutely couldn’t do this without them!"

- She's staying busy: Coming from a solo role, she worried this position might be a little "too quiet." Spoiler alert: She is staying incredibly busy and loving every minute of it!

Lynn says this community already feels like family. 🍎 Next time you stop by the pantry or meal program, please give her a warm welcome! 💚

🌱 Did you know? During the growing season, the Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) Food Pantry Garden provides all the fresh produce for both our food pantry and meal program!

The best part? This incredible garden is powered entirely by volunteers. 💚

Whether you have a green thumb or have never picked up a garden trowel, we'd love to have you join us. No gardening experience is necessary—just a willingness to lend a hand and help provide fresh, healthy food for our neighbors in need.

Bethy and her husband Carlos are dedicated students in the CMC's English classes. Bethy shared with us why it is important to her to improve her English;
"I use English all day. My listening skills are good, but I want to understand what people are saying better. I use English when traveling, going to the hospital, and most importantly with my family who lives in and is from Wisconsin. They all speak English fluently at home, and I want to be able to talk with them easily. I like the class because I learn many new words each day. The teachers are very patient, even though it can be difficult to teach so many people from different cultures."

The Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) and the African Center for Community Development hosted a community hike on the Twin Pines segment of the Ice Age Trail this July, and what a beautiful day it was! The group powered through a 3-mile hike, despite the heat, taking in the beautiful views of the Driftless Area and learning about native/invasive plants.

The community came out to celebrate our beloved Antonio Quintanilla's retirement from CMC's food pantry coordinator on July 10th with delicious food, a special Ballet Folklorico performance, and many stories of the life-changing impact Antonio has had on so many people. We thank all who joined in the celebrations, and thank Antonio for all he has done for the community over his 26 years of service with the CMC!

Volunteer groups from Love Begins Here and La Crescent United Methodist Church spent time at the Catholic Multicultural Center over the past two weeks, serving at the community meal, picking up trash around the grounds, weeding the garden, and cleaning the kitchen.

Their work makes a real difference in keeping the center running for the guests we welcome every day.
