ON A ROLL: Danny is making things happen!

Recently recognized at Manhattan Hilton Garden Inn as a team member of the month, Danny continues to show what perseverance looks like in action. He’s also growing as a leader, recently stepping into a peer mentor role within our housing program.

When we asked Danny what’s necessary for success in a job, he didn’t hesitate:

“Perseverance.”

Keep showing up. Keep pushing through setbacks. Don’t give up.

Danny knows that progress doesn’t happen overnight… but he’s proving what can happen when you stay the course.

A big shoutout our friends at Hilton Garden Inn, and especially Dana Burmeister... Thank you for all you do to give our community members a chance to succeed!

This is actually a pretty big deal for us. We love seeing local employers meet people where they are and create real opportunities for employment.

And honestly… we’d love for other businesses to get just jealous enough to do the same! 😉

Looking for work? Come see us TOMORROW.

Coffee’s on, the doors are open, and we’re grateful to be together today.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor those whose service and sacrifice made so much possible.

ON THE MOVE! This morning we experienced a great moment with Darrin and Angie gifting an e-bike to Justen, helping provide dependable transportation to work and important meetings. The bike itself was generously donated by John and Heather, and we’re incredibly grateful for their kindness!

Justen was deeply thankful for the generosity and encouragement shown to him today. Acts of support like this can create real momentum and open doors of opportunity.

Thank you all for believing in second chances and practical ways to help people move forward.

ENCOURAGEMENT: Pop-ins like this keep us going.

Bobby stopped by Be Able this afternoon to give Scott a t-shirt he designed as a thank you for the support he received during a difficult season of life.

Today, Bobby is living sober, off parole, active in NA, and continuing to make steady strides forward. The shirt he created for his NA group features a heart with wings and one powerful word in the center:

HOPE.

And honestly, that word fits Bobby’s story well.

We’re proud of the hard work he continues to put in and grateful we’ve had the chance to walk alongside him on the journey.

Keep going, Bobby! The path you’re on matters.

LEADERSHIP: Being a Housing Director isn’t just a title... it’s a daily commitment to walk alongside men who are rebuilding their lives.

It means providing accountability... ensuring cleanliness, attendance at weekly house meetings, consistent testing, and that program expectations are met.
It means encouraging sobriety, employment, and forward progress.
It means doing the behind-the-scenes work... interviews, background checks, orientations, setting standards, and helping navigate real-life challenges as they come.

And it means doing all of that with both firmness and grace.

That balance isn’t easy. But Chad hits it.

He builds trust. He sets the tone. He walks with our men through both victories and setbacks. We’re grateful for Chad and the role he plays in helping make second chances possible.

MYTH MONDAY: “Be Able only cares about housing men.”
Reality: Women are in our heart, in our work, and in our future plans.

Every time we share a housing win, we hear the question:
“What about women?”

And we appreciate those who ask. Advocating for women in our community is a great thing, and we care deeply about women too.

Our original housing vision included both men and women. But the more we learned, the more we realized that housing men and women in close proximity often creates more complications than solutions. So we made the intentional decision to begin with housing for men.

That was never because women don’t matter to us.

Women are a vital part of Be Able every day. We have 4 strong women on staff, many fantastic women volunteers, and more than 35% of those we serve are women. Women come to Be Able for help with employment, recovery, housing navigation, mental health support, ID recovery, and more.

We also have plans to launch a women’s home in the next year, and last week we submitted a local grant to help make that possible.

This is where we started. It is not where our vision ends!

Need help? Call us at 785-775-1205.
Want to help launch women’s housing? Contact Scott at [email protected]. If you know of a property, have a rental opportunity, want to donate toward this effort, or would like to help make this vision a reality, we’d love to connect.

FOUR YEARS!

Today we celebrate Hank’s 4-year sobriety anniversary... and what a four years it’s been.

Hank hasn’t just committed himself to daily recovery… he’s become a trusted guide for others trying to take those same difficult steps.

In just a few short years, Hank:
• Graduated from Riley County Recovery Court
• Began volunteering daily at Be Able
• Joined our staff as a Recovery Case Manager
• And now oversees the two NA groups that meet at Be Able each week

If someone is looking for a community that will walk with them through recovery, Hank is one of the first people we’d want them to meet. He’s able to connect with people in a deeply authentic way because he’s walked the road himself.

Scott put it this way:
“Hank is on the ground floor with people in active adversity and addiction. He has built-in trust and credibility that can’t be obtained without his unique experience.”

And it’s true. Hank’s influence in the recovery community is real, and our city is better because of him.

We’re proud of you, Hank. Four years is a huge deal.

A DIFFERENT PATH STARTS HERE: Each week, our team walks into the Riley County Jail to meet with individuals nearing release... sitting down, listening, and helping build a plan for what comes next.

Housing. Employment. Recovery. A real path forward.

These conversations matter. Many of the men and women we meet are genuinely ready for something different... and they look forward to these moments.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to step into that space and walk alongside people at a critical turning point in their lives.

A special thank you to Major French and RileyCountyPD Corrections for the partnership and trust. It makes this work possible.

“OUR TEAM HELPING YOUR TEAM”

That’s what the back of their shirts said... and they lived it out this morning!

Our friends from Varney & Associates, CPAs, LLC showed up with 11 people for a serve day at Be Able, jumping right in to help with handwritten thank you notes for our donors. Tables full of labels, envelopes, and cards... and a team ready to get it done.

We’re so grateful for their support and the way they showed up for our community. This is what partnership looks like!
