Clergy Scams on the Rise

Often they begin with an innocent message: “Can you do me a favor?” The message comes from con-artists posing as clergy. Often the “favor” is buying gift cards for a false need.To pull off their misdeeds, scammers pose as pastors, preachers and priests. These impostors coax unsuspecting congregants into spending hundreds of dollars on gift cards, supposedly for people in need, then escape with the loot.Believed to be a growing problem, clergy scams occur across all faith groups and across the U.S.

The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office wants everyone to be aware of this current scam and how it unfolds.Predators rely on the same playbookThe scam unfolds like this:

The bad actors hijack the identity of a religious leader or, say, an administrative staffer at a house of worship.
They text or email congregants with a sob story: A cancer patient is hurting for cash, a man was tossed out of work, a family's home has flooded after the pipes burst, etc.
There's always an excuse as to why the religious leaders can't help at that moment. That they are unavailable is often the rationale for seeking outside help.
If, as instructed, the victim of the scam buys gift cards and the cards’ serial numbers and PINs are handed over to the impostor through a call or digital photo.
The criminals disappear, leaving their victims reeling.

Here’s an example:
"Hi Jane, do you have a moment? I have a request I need you to handle discreetly. I’m currently going into a meeting now. Text me back as soon as possible.Blessings,
~Pastor John Doe"
She responded to that text because it sounded just like something Pastor John Doe would say. Then she immediately got this text in response:
"Good to hear from you Jane, I need to make a donation for some Shut-in members with cancer, but I can't go to the store right now to pick up the gift items. Can you please pick up some gift/cards from any store near you now? I will refund you as soon as I can.Blessings,
~Pastor John Doe"

If you receive this type of message, first reach out to your congregation/Pastor for confirmation. Call your church administration office, not the number you received the message from! Never provide gift card information over the phone.

Please Report this and other types of scams to your local Law Enforcement Agency.

With the rain continuing throughout the night and temperatures hovering around freezing, the roads both in town and rural are challenging. Calling the street department out early and hopefully with rising temps conditions will improve early. As always, plan on driving at a lower rate of speed, leave plenty of distance between yourself and other vehicles, and allow extra time for slowing/stopping. “Black ice” is spotty even on the salted roads. Be safe out there!

School is closed today, January 22, due to icy road conditions. Enjoy your snow day!

Rain started at 3:15am with the temperature at 25°. The unsalted roads ARE slick. Drive accordingly and give yourself extra time to slow down/stop.

We didn’t get a lot of snow, maybe 1.5”, but the roads are drifting over. Road conditions are spotty. Use caution and give yourself extra time if you need to go out.

The streets in town have turned to ice. The Manito blacktop has also turned to ice. If you do not need to get out, stay inside. Please be careful out here. It's terrible out!!!

With the weather coming in and below zero temperatures, we will be looking for fur babies being left outside!! PUT YOUR PETS INSIDE!! Please do not leave your pets unattended outside. We understand that sometimes they get away from you. Please make sure you have identification on the collar somewhere. Make sure your phone number and address is on there. This will help us get your fur baby back to you safely and quickly. If we have to call animal control you will probably receive a citation. Our main concern is to get your fur baby back home safe as soon as possible. Also make sure you tap on your vehicles before starting them because animals crawl up underneath the hood to keep warm. Thank you for your cooperation in this and please be safe out there. We will be out in the weather as usual and if you need any help with anything don't be afraid to call the Manito Police Department. Thank you!!

UPDATE: Road is open
