On October 12, students visited Blendon Woods Metropolitan Park.
Students participated in a creek study, wading into the stream with nets to catch, examine, and release various aquatic animals. Their finds included salamanders, a leech, several crayfish, and frogs. The combination of species helped students determine that the water quality in the creek could be improved. After the creek study, families hiked through the woods to the nature center and viewed several exhibits with live animals in them.

Earning college credits for free while earning high school credits at the same time?! That’s the wonder of College Credit Plus! Students in grades 6-11 can participate in the 26-27 spring semester of CCP courses by submitting their Letter of Intent by November 1. Find more information at treca.org/ccp.

On October 1, students took a trip to Wildwood Preserve Metro Park in Toledo, OH.
Wildwood Preserve Metro Park is a nature reserve, historic estate, and the most visited of the Toledo Metroparks. Students participated in a river study by investigating what lives below the surface of ponds and rivers, using scientific field sampling techniques to determine the health of a river through chemical analysis. Families were very engaged, and students loved finding and identifying their samples to determine how polluted the water was.

On September 24, students visited the Ohio Bird Sanctuary!
The Ohio Bird Sanctuary is a haven for native birds, a nature preserve, and a living museum dedicated to caring for and rehabilitating Ohio native birds, protecting natural habitats, and creating opportunities for people to engage with nature. Students learned about the mission of the Ohio Bird Sanctuary through a bird of prey presentation and saw some feathered friends up close outside of their enclosures. Students met a red tailed hawk, American kestrel, screech owl. Families learned about each species and why they were not able to be released back into the wild. Students then took a guided hike along the trails, learned about a variety of flora and fauna, and toured the bird displays and songbird aviary.

Take a virtual “Tour of the Universe” on a virtual trip with the Cincinnati Observatory on Oct 21! During this live program, students will learn about celestial objects, our place in space, and the layout of the cosmos. Students in grades 6-12 can RSVP by looking for the post in Brightspace.
