Vernon Middle School is part of the Marion Independent School District in the heart of Marion, Iowa.

We proudly serve students in grades 5-8 and are committed to providing a safe and supporting school environment where we firmly believe all students can achieve academic excellence. As a staff we know the middle school years are critical in the development of social, emotional and future ready skills. It is our belief that students, parents, staff and community are true partners in the education of all students. We are united in a shared vision in which high expectations equal high achievements. At Vernon Middle School we also want to foster an environment in which students and staff strive to meet The Marion Way. Respect, Responsibility, and Integrity are our way of life here at Vernon Middle School and we work hard to create an environment where all individuals respect themselves, respect others and respect their school. We are doing great things every day and continue to challenge ourselves to do even better. We have an incredibly talented and dedicated staff, we utilize the most current research in grading and learning, students are encouraged to explore and be creative, and we have an extremely supportive parent and community base.

VMS students in Ms. Ehrle's Literacy class recently participated in a "group sort" activity with a plot diagram to analyze and place which pieces/events from the text were the exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution (and protagonist/antagonist). Great work, literacy students!

VMS Teen Living students have been hard at work with first quarter activities that include sewing and cooking projects, as well as creating research posters about making healthy choices. The final projects look great!

Vernon artists have been hard at work creating and showcasing creative designs in Mrs. Hale's seventh and eighth grade art classes. Seventh grade art students designed a functioning whistle built from a basic form. That basic form needed to be concealed in the final product. Discussion and strategy of design determined the success of the whistle. Eighth graders designed a functioning Tic Tac Toe board with a clear theme that coordinated with original X and O pieces. The design and shape of the board needed to work well with the pieces, allowing them to fit well. The design process often needed revision or reworking to make this happen. Students reviewed each other's design to give valuable feedback. Great work, Vernon artists!

Sofi V. ran at the IATC Middle School State Cross Country meet this past weekend, placing 29th with a time of 13:38. This puts her 5th all-time for 8th-grade girls at VMS! Congratulations to Sofi!

The VMS ELL program hosted a social meet and greet last week, which allowed middle school students that are currently enrolled, graduated from, or have siblings in ELL to get to know each other. Everyone had fun, and students got to enjoy some tasty donuts, too!
