The City of Mesquite has adopted an updated ordinance for bicycles, electric bicycles, and scooters. This new city ordinance also applies to students traveling to and from school each day

Here are a few important rules to know:

🪖 HELMETS ARE REQUIRED: Anyone under 18 years old must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or an electrified bicycle or scooter on any public roadway. This includes the roads, sidewalks, bike lanes, paths, and other public travel areas.

🚦 Riders must obey traffic signs and signals and travel in the same direction as traffic.

🚶 Pedestrians always have the right-of-way. Riders must take whatever action is necessary, including slowing, stopping, or dismounting, to allow pedestrians to pass safely.

⚠️ Wheelies, stunts, unsafe speeds, reckless riding, and attaching yourself or your bicycle/device to a moving vehicle are prohibited.

Parents and students: please remember the helmet requirement. If you're under 18 and riding, wear your helmet. It’s not only a good safety habit, it’s required by City ordinance.

🎒📚 **Welcome Back, Students!** 🍎✏️

A new school year is here, and the Mesquite Police Department would like to wish every student, teacher, administrator, support staff, and family a safe and successful start to the year!

Whether you're at Virgin Valley Elementary, Bunkerville Elementary, Hughes Middle School, or Virgin Valley High School, we hope this year is filled with opportunities to learn, grow, make new friends, and create lasting memories.

Throughout the school year, you'll see our School Resource Officers working alongside school staff to help provide a safe and positive learning environment. Our SROs are more than police officers; they're mentors, educators, and trusted members of each school community who are always happy to say hello or lend a helping hand.

You'll also see our dedicated school crossing guards helping students safely cross the street each day. Their commitment, along with the patience and attention of our community's drivers, plays an important role in keeping our children safe.

As school resumes, we ask everyone to do their part:

🛑 Watch carefully for students crossing the street.

📵 Put distractions away and stay focused on the road.

🎒🚲 Back to School Means Safe Choices Are Back! 🚲🎒

As students head back to school next week, the Mesquite Police Department is excited to continue our Safe Choices, Sweet Rewards program!

Throughout the school year, our School Resource Officers and patrol officers will be watching for students who are making smart, safe decisions on their way to and from school. Whether it's wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle or scooter, using crosswalks, obeying traffic signals, or practicing other safe behaviors, you just might earn a reward!

Thanks to the continued generosity of our community partners, officers may hand out stickers or coupons for treats from local businesses as a way to recognize and encourage safe choices. Rewards may vary throughout the year, but the goal remains the same: to reinforce positive behavior and help keep our kids safe.

Our focus is education and safety. By recognizing good decisions, we hope to build lifelong safety habits that benefit our entire community.

To our students: Keep making smart choices, look out for one another, and if you see one of our officers, don't be surprised if your safe actions earn you a reward!

Many members of our community have recently asked questions about Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology and how it relates to privacy. We appreciate those questions and believe it's important to explain the system used by the Mesquite Police Department.

First, it's important to know that the Mesquite Police Department only uses Motorola Avigilon L6Q cameras, which is a purpose built ALPR camera system built for still images of license plates. The small number of cameras we have deployed are located at select Interstate 15 on- and off-ramps. Not at businesses and not in neighborhoods. Their purpose is to assist officers with criminal investigations and to help identify vehicles associated with criminal activity. The process to obtain the system began in the year 2021 and it was fully activated in 2023.

Our ALPR system operates under a strict department policy designed to protect the privacy of our community.

Here's what that means:

• The Mesquite Police Department owns and controls all of the data collected by our ALPR system. The information is stored on department owned servers, and no outside company, including Motorola, has access to our data.

• The information collected is never shared with private businesses or commercial organizations.

• The system captures license plate information from vehicles traveling on public roadways. It is not used to identify people or monitor individuals' daily activities, nor does it have the capability to do so.

• Our ALPR cameras do not record video and cannot perform facial recognition. They are designed solely to capture license plate information.

• Access to ALPR data is restricted to authorized personnel for legitimate law enforcement purposes in accordance with department policy.

• Data is retained in accordance with the State of Nevada's approved records retention schedule and is securely managed by the Mesquite Police Department.

The use of license plate readers by law enforcement has also been reviewed by the courts. The United States Supreme Court has consistently recognized that license plates displayed on public roadways are in plain view and generally do not carry the same expectation of privacy as information kept private inside a vehicle or home.

Technology can be a valuable tool when used responsibly. Our goal is to use it in a way that helps solve crimes, locate wanted or missing persons, recover stolen vehicles, and improve public safety while respecting the constitutional rights and privacy of everyone in our community.

If It Sounds Too Good to Be True...

Investment scammers promise:

📈 Guaranteed returns.
📈 No risk.
📈 Exclusive opportunities.
📈 Fast profits.

Many victims are introduced through:
• Social media
• Dating apps
• Text messages
• WhatsApp or Telegram groups
• Online advertisements

Scammers often create fake investment websites that show impressive "profits."

The money appears to grow...

Until you try to withdraw it.

That's when they demand:
• Taxes
• Processing fees
• Verification payments
• Additional deposits

These fees never end because there was never a real investment.

Protect Yourself

✔ Be skeptical of guaranteed returns.
✔ Research investment firms independently.
✔ Never invest because someone pressures you to act immediately.
✔ Talk to a licensed financial professional before investing.

Investment fraud continues to be one of the costliest cybercrimes reported to the FBI each year.

DAY 5: Romance Scams

They Aren't Looking for Love, They're Looking for Money

Romance scammers spend weeks, or even months, earning a victim's trust.

They may claim to be:
❤️ Military personnel overseas
❤️ Doctors
❤️ Engineers
❤️ Oil workers
❤️ Business professionals traveling abroad

Eventually, an emergency appears.

They suddenly need money for:
• Medical bills
• Plane tickets
• Customs fees
• Business problems
• Cryptocurrency investments

Many victims never meet the person in real life.

Warning Signs

🚩 They quickly profess love.
🚩 They avoid video calls or in-person meetings.
🚩 They always have a reason they can't visit.
🚩 They eventually ask for money.

Never send money to someone you've only met online, no matter how convincing their story may be.

DAY 4: Tech Support Scams

"Your Computer Has a Virus!"

Have you ever seen a frightening pop-up saying:

⚠ Your computer is infected!
⚠ Call Microsoft immediately!
⚠ Your banking information has been stolen!

It's almost certainly a scam.

Criminals may also call claiming to represent:
• Microsoft
• Apple
• Amazon
• Your internet provider
• Your bank

Their goal is to convince you to:
• Allow remote access to your computer.
• Install software.
• Reveal passwords.
• Pay for fake repairs.

Once inside your computer, they may steal personal information, banking credentials, and even lock you out of your own device.

Protect Yourself

✔ Legitimate companies do not make unsolicited tech support calls.
✔ Never allow remote access to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
✔ Close suspicious pop-ups instead of calling the number displayed.

DAY 3: Utility Company Scams

🚨 SCAM SERIES: DAY 3

"Your Power Will Be Shut Off Today"

Scammers often pretend to represent utility companies.

They'll claim:
⚡ Your bill is overdue.
⚡ Service will be disconnected within minutes.
⚡ Immediate payment is required.

To avoid disconnection, they'll ask for:
• Gift cards
• Cryptocurrency
• Payment apps
• Wire transfers

Some scammers even spoof the real utility company's phone number.

Know the Facts

Legitimate utility companies generally:
✔ Send multiple notices before disconnecting service.
✔ Offer several payment options.
✔ Never demand gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Before You Pay

Call your utility company using the phone number printed on your bill—not the number that called you.

Don't let fear make your financial decisions.
