Carmen High School of Science and Technology opened in 2007 as a small college preparatory high school with a rigorous liberal arts curriculum that emphasizes science. Students must take four full years of each of the following subjects: English, laboratory science, social studies/history, and mathematics (Algebra 1 and above). In addition, students take three years of Spanish or Spanish for Herit

age Speakers and at least one full year of Fine Arts. Courses in engineering and Advanced Placement (AP) subjects are also offered and enrollment is not restricted. The curriculum also integrates the Eight Abilities (21st Century Skills) originally developed for college students by Alverno College. Each student works with his or her academic advisor to create an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) in which academic, personal/life, and financial SMART goals are set and plans and schedules for achieving them are made. After school and summer academic enrichment and support programs, including a mandatory 8th grade to high school summer bridge program, are offered to meet the needs of all students. Carmen HS students also participate in junior varsity and varsity athletic programs, a variety of clubs, and are required to complete 20 hours of community service each year. The original Carmen campus is located on the south side of Milwaukee and serves 320 students. Due to exceptional results and long waiting lists at the original campus, a second campus was opened on the northwest side of Milwaukee in August 2013. The new campus houses both a middle school and high school with approximately 60 sixth grade students and 140 freshmen. New sixth and ninth
grade cohorts will be added annually until the 2016-2017 school year, when 800 students will be served in grades 6-12.

This week, our campuses are welcoming families for Back to School Nights, and next week, we welcome our students back for Bridge as we prepare to officially begin a milestone 20 years of Carmen.

For two decades, Carmen has remained committed to our mission of graduating students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners prepared for success in college, meaningful careers, community involvement, and family life. We begin this next chapter—with new and transformed campuses, expanded opportunities for students, new programming, and a continued commitment to educational excellence in Milwaukee. We’re excited about what’s ahead!

”We are feeling really positive,” said Aaron Lippman, CEO of the Carmen schools. “We are in a really good position as we enter our 20th year to execute on our mission.”
