We are actively SHIFTING POWER to care providers and families by making space for community voice at decision making tables.

In the past year, we supported the distribution of grants to local care providers, facilitated paid ECE advocacy trainings for local parents, and recently welcomed two ECE experts — Ann Terrell and Terryl Wheelock — to our leadership table.

June 21st - July 30th, Milwaukee Succeeds paid Milwaukee youth to inform us HOW schools can better support Black male youth.

The answer was unanimous: our schools have severely underestimated the importance of student mental health.

Child care providers have helped each other apply for grants during the pandemic. Will the increased funds be enough?

"For now, with the school year on the verge of starting, with the delta variant surge making further school closures a possibility, with the continued need for masking and social distancing – all in the midst of a worsening staffing shortage – support for child care providers will be more important than ever."

This article features Yimma Davila-Castro: a child care provider, board member of Proveedoras Unidas, and active leader of our Early Childhood Education Coalition.

She shares her perspective on the increased collaboration between local childcare services and continuing need for child care support.

Especially after a week of goodbyes, we're excited to recognize some new and advancing members of the Milwaukee Succeeds Team! Today we want to CELEBRATE Daria Hall and Kristin Kappelman!!!

This past year, both Daria and Kristin worked through the Wisconsin Partnership to lead the Parents Advocating for Child Care fellowship. Throughout this 8-month program, they shared with parents: HOW to find information about child care, create a compelling personal story using data, and share that story with local and state representatives.

While Daria was already a force at Milwaukee Succeeds, we officially welcomed Kristin to our family this past summer!

We are ELATED to have this powerful duo continue their work together, spearheading Early Childhood Education goals at Milwaukee Succeeds!

On Monday, we not only said goodbye to a fantastic cohort of Americorps VISTAs, but our outstanding VISTA Leader Jarvell Williams.

Throughout his one and a half years of service, Jarvell helped hire and train other VISTAs, mentored Youth Forward MKE ambassadors, and tirelessly worked to elevate Milwaukee Succeeds' work culture.

Because of Jarvell's expert and unwavering insight, our team cohesion and trajectory towards organizational goals has skyrocketed!!!

We are so sad to say good-bye (for now), but know that you have so much ahead! Thank you from all of us, and good luck in your next chapter at Marquette University!

Yesterday we said goodbye to four fantastic Americorps VISTA team members!

Tim Knapp, Jordan Fierst, Courtney Raatz, and Emily Wilson all finished their volunteer year with Milwaukee Succeeds, working in Early Childhood Education, High School Success, communications, and data support.

Although we're sad to see them go, we are so thankful for the work accomplished and community they've built over the past year.

So, to our VISTAs,
Thank you! Your skills pushed forward the work in ways we couldn't have imagined. Good luck in your future endeavors, and we look forward to all you have ahead!

Milwaukee Succeeds is working to center lived experience. A big way we centered student voice this year is through the PAID Design Your Future fellowship.

The 6 Design Your Future teams — Jibali, Voices of MKE, Stellar Scholars, Next Gen of Hope, Goal Diggers, and La Familia — all made plans on how THEY think high school can be improved to support Black male youth.

Check out highlights of their project proposals below!

This summer, Milwaukee Succeeds created the first-ever Design Your Future Fellowship. This program — run through our high school success initiative Youth Forward MKE — gave 60 young people the opportunity to create plans on HOW to increase the success of Black male youth in Milwaukee.

Through the effort of these fellows, guidance provided by 12 fantastic community mentors, and facilitation from David Emmanuelle Castillo of Equitable Systems Consultants, LLC., 6 plans to change education were solidified by July 30th.

Milwaukee Succeeds is now pushing forward to implement these plans in Milwaukee schools.

Follow us as we begin to reveal the plans created throughout the summer fellowship or learn more about the initiative here: www.youthforwardmke.org
