Today marks the first day of summer.

As the season begins, NSA Monterey encourages everyone to enjoy the Central Coast safely and responsibly. Warmer weather and increased outdoor activity also bring increased risk, especially around the ocean, on the road, and during recreational activities.

Stay alert, plan ahead, and take care of each other this summer. A little preparation goes a long way.

PTSD does not just affect the individual experiencing it. It can affect spouses, children, friends, coworkers, and entire families.

Understanding what PTSD is — and what it is not — can help families support each other more effectively.

Heart disease remains one of the leading health risks for men in the United States.

Diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and regular medical care all play a role in reducing long-term risk.

Small habits repeated consistently matter more than short-term fixes.

Heart-healthy living means understanding your risk, making healthy choices, and taking steps to lower your chances of heart disease. These actions can lower your risk of heart disease and improve your overall health and well-being.

June is Lightning Safety Awareness Month.

Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm, which means you may be at risk even when the storm doesn't appear to be directly overhead. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

When thunderstorms are in the area, move quickly to a safe location inside a substantial building or a fully enclosed metal vehicle. Once inside, avoid using corded electrical devices and plumbing until the storm has passed. After the last clap of thunder, wait at least 30 minutes before returning outdoors.

Remember:

• No place outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area.
• If you hear thunder, head indoors immediately.
• Lightning can strike well beyond the rain shaft of a storm.
• Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside.

When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors.

For more lightning safety information, visit the National Weather Service at https://www.weather.gov/safety/lightning.
