On Tuesday, May 19th at approximately 9:14 pm, Morgan's Point Resort Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Leeward Dr. The caller indicated they smelled smoke shortly after an extremely close lightning strike. Initial MPR units arrived on scene in about 4 1/2 minutes and observed smoke in the interior of the home and coming from the attic area. MPR Engine 62 arrived on scene and firefighters made entry to the attic space through the garage and were able to locate the source. The smoldering fire was quickly extinguished limiting it to the attic area. The fire appears to have been caused by a lightning strike to the chimney that traveled through the walls and exited in multiple spots, igniting the framing and insulation.
Morgan's Point Resort Fire Rescue would like to thank the rapid response from the Moffatt Volunteer Fire Department, Temple Fire Department, Belton EMS and the MPRPD for their assistance.
Units responding were MPR 601, 602, 603, Squad 61 and Engine 62, MPRPD, Moffatt Engine 11 and 12, Temple Engine 7 and Belton Medic 2.
