No matter how you pronounce it, peonies make a stunning addition to any landscape! These hardy perennials feature large, vibrant blooms in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, with a lovely fragrance to match. While they can take a few years to establish, a healthy peony plant can thrive for more than 100 years!

Congratulations to Hayley Trotter, student worker at the WVU Extension Small Farm Center, for her recent graduation from the Davis College at WVU! Working for the Small Farm Center and pursuing school at the same time has allowed her to gain valuable real-world experience. 🎓

“Honestly, working in the Small Farm Center has completely changed the trajectory of my academic experience. I’m learning about soil health, greenhouse production, sustainability, fashion – and then I’m applying it directly to fibers, sheep farmers, wool use, and local food systems. These are real-world experiences I never would’ve gotten from just taking regular academic courses. It’s completely shaped who I am and where I’m going.” Congrats, Hayley! 💛💙

In 2026, oil and gas workers will be able to receive free training from WVU Extension Safety and Health thanks to the Occupational Safety and Heath Administration Susan Harwood Training grant. 🦺🛢️🎓

Amanda Mason, assistant director for the NRC-WVU OSHA Training Institute Education Center, says this year’s safety training will focus on fall prevention and protection using real-world examples and hands-on activities.

“Anytime you have a growing industry, you might have newer companies, as well as newer employees who may or may not have the education and training, they need to adequately protect themselves. The more people there are, the more of a need there is for training.”

These students are on FIRE! Experts from our WVU Extension Fire Service partnered with Dr. Jackson’s forensics class at WVU to do some unique hands-on teaching that you can’t get anywhere else in the state. 🔥👩‍🚒

Having live fire scenes set up by our experts allowed the students to witness a part of the process they don’t normally get to see as forensic investigators. Our experts then helped students examine the scenes, determining the cause and where to take accelerant samples that they can later test in the lab. This kind of up-close and personal education is crucial for future fire investigators, and we are proud to be a part of passing along the knowledge! 🚒👨‍🚒

The Moundsville Middle School Young Innovators club hosted a kickoff event last week to celebrate the opening of their Graffiti Wall, a student-driven initiative to beautify and bring art into their community.

During the event, students gave presentations about their work to bring the Moundsville Graffiti Wall to life over the school year, including winning their category at the Mountain State Innovators Summit this fall. Everyone even got to add their own contribution to the art on the wall! 💡🎨
