A long weekend is the first stretch of unscheduled time most couples have had since June. That is why it tells you so much.

Three days off together, and the conversations are about who is driving, what time you are leaving, and whether anybody paid the water bill. Not a fight. Just logistics. You are not angry at each other. You are just running parallel.

Couples counseling is not only for couples in crisis. It is also for two people who like each other and have not been alone in a room in eleven weeks.

In person in New Braunfels or online across Texas. Call (830) 515-8480 or start here: https://riverbend-counseling.com/meet-our-therapists/

Grief does not run on a schedule.

Some mornings are ordinary. Coffee gets made, the day gets handled. Then a song comes on in the grocery store aisle and the whole thing comes back at full volume. That is not backsliding. That is how loss works.

People around you may expect it to be finished by now. Six months. A year. After the holidays. Grief does not check the calendar, and there is no correct pace for it.

Counseling does not put the missing piece back. Nothing does. What it offers is a steady place to say the hard parts out loud, and support while you find your footing again around the space that got left.

We see clients in person in New Braunfels and online across Texas. Call (830) 515-8480 when you are ready.

Please help us welcome Kenzi Gray, LPC-Associate, to RiverBend Counseling.

Kenzi works with teens, young adults, and adults who feel overwhelmed,
stuck, or like they don't quite fit where they are. She specializes in
anxiety, self-esteem, identity exploration, neurodivergence, and life
transitions, with a particular focus on supporting LGBTQ+ clients working
through relationships, belonging, and the challenge of feeling understood
by others.

A lot of her work is with people in their late teens and twenties, sorting
out college, graduation, first jobs, relationships, and what independence
actually looks like. Her approach is collaborative and affirming. You make
sense of your own experiences, build self-trust, and move forward in a way
that feels like yours.

Kenzi is an LPC-Associate practicing under the supervision of Jay Jeter, LPC-S.
She sees clients in person here in New Braunfels and online anywhere
in Texas, and she is taking new clients now.

You can grieve someone you have never met.

The world lost an amazing person this week; the one and only, Dolly Parton. She touched so many people through her music, her songs, her philanthropy, her kindness, and her love. She was one of the few people that everyone loved. It came as a shock to so many. She was a part of our lives for decades in so many ways. So if your heart and mind have felt a little heavier the last couple of days, there is nothing strange about that.

She was on the playlist on the way to school. She was on the radio in somebody's grandmother's kitchen. She put a book in the mailbox every month for kids who did not have many at home through one of her foundations, Imagination Library.

When a person has been in the background of your whole life, losing them can take a piece of your own timeline with it. It makes us think of your favorite song of hers, and it brings up so many memories, or that time you saw her, or wanted to see her, when she was performing close by. You think of a movie she was in and the memories it brought back when you saw it. She touched so many lives in so many ways.

So, if someone tells you it's silly to cry over a singer you have never met. It's far from it. It just happens to be the kind of grief that no one will send you a casserole for. You'll feel a lot of emotions remembering her.

So feel it. Put on your favorite Dolly Parton song. Turn the music up. Call somebody who loved her too.

The kid who was fine all summer.

Then school starts and something changes. They are quieter at dinner. The bedroom door closes earlier. The stomachaches start before school. Or they suddenly have a reason they cannot go.

Some of that can be a normal adjustment. What matters is whether it keeps going, gets stronger, or starts interfering with school, sleep, friendships, or life at home.

Some people are very good at noticing what everyone else needs.

Teachers. Nurses. First responders. Parents. The person who always says, ‘I’ve got it.’

What we often miss is that burnout does not always look like falling apart. Sometimes it looks like getting through the day, then sitting in the driveway for ten minutes because you are not ready to walk inside and be needed again. Sometimes it is feeling flat, irritable, or checked out instead of sad.

Therapy can be a place where you do not have to be the capable one for an hour.

RiverBend Counseling offers individual therapy in New Braunfels and online for clients located in Texas.

An intrusive thought is not a plan.

It is a sentence your brain produced without asking you, and almost everyone gets them. The driver who suddenly thinks about the wheel. The new parent who thinks about the stairs. It arrives, it is horrifying, and it says nothing about who you are.

With OCD, the trouble is what happens after. The checking. The rereading. Asking somebody you don't think I would actually do that, right, one more time. The ten minutes of relief that follows. Then it starts again.

The thought is not the problem. What you do to make it go away is the problem.

That is worth saying plainly, because most people with OCD spend years believing the thought is the thing that needs fixing.

It is not. And the part that does need fixing has treatment with real evidence behind it. Exposure and response prevention, or ERP.

At RiverBend Counseling, we have BTTI-trained clinicians who are also members of the International OCD Foundation. We use various treatments for OCD, including exposure and response prevention, or ERP.

Back-to-school in New Braunfels happens at three different times.

NBCA went back on the 12th. NBISD goes back on the 17th. Comal ISD on the 25th.

Thirteen days from the first bus to the last. Which means the driveway that went quiet this morning is on a street where somebody else still has two weeks of summer left, and the parent who is already past it cannot help the one who has not started.

That is why the advice at the ballfield lands strange. You are both right about your own house.

Here is the part that holds across all three. The first week is louder than you expect. Everybody is watching, everybody is trying, and the new backpack still has the tag on the zipper.

The second week is quieter than you expect. That is when the routine stops being new, and the house gets its first ordinary Tuesday since May.

Some parents feel relief in that quiet. Some feel something missing. Most feel both inside ten minutes.

All of it is normal. When it stops feeling normal, that is a reasonable time to talk to somebody.

The question people are most nervous to ask on the phone is what it costs.

Ask it. It is the first thing we sort out, and the front desk won't make it awkward.

Two paths. If you are paying privately, we can often get you in the same day. If you are using insurance, we will verify your benefits and provide a clear answer within 24 business hours. You will know the number before you sit down.

It is okay to think about the money. Maybe it is a co-pay. Maybe it is something you set aside every week. Whatever that looks like in your household, it is a fair thing to weigh out loud.

It's back-to-school season in New Braunfels.

It brings up a lot at once for both the parents and the kids. The shopping. The lists. Making sure everybody has what they need to walk in on day one and feel like they belong there.

NBCA goes back on the 12th. NBISD on the 17th. Comal ISD on the 25th.

You are allowed to be glad they are going back.

The house has not been quiet since May. Somebody has needed something from you every day since the last bell in June, and there is a version of you that has been waiting all summer for a Tuesday morning with nothing in it.

You can also cry about it in the car.

Both are true. Neither one makes you a bad parent.

RiverBend Counseling has been in New Braunfels for over 25 years, and we work with parents as often as we work with kids. We are here when you want to talk about it.
