Lyon Township

Lyon Township Honoring Yesterday. Building Tomorrow. Lyon Township was founded on March 7, 1834 as a general law township.

The Township Board of Trustees approved a resolution on January 15, 1980 to make Lyon Township a charter township. The seven member Board of Trustees, consisting of a supervisor, clerk, treasurer, and four trustees, directs the Township. Lyon Township is located in the southwest corner of Oakland County, which is in southeast Michigan. Approximately 32 square miles in size, the Township is bordere

d by Dixboro Road on the west, Napier Road to the east, Pontiac Trail to the north, and Eight Mile Road to the south. Neighboring communities are the cities of South Lyon, Novi, and Wixom and the townships of Milford, Green Oak, and Salem. I-96 bisects the northern portion of the Township, running parallel to Grand River Avenue. The population of Lyon Township in the 2010 census was 14,545, an increase of 31.6% from the 2000 census. Population growth has continued to increase due to numerous residential developments being created in the Township. Two school districts serve Lyon Township: South Lyon Community Schools and Northville Community Schools. The Township is served by five post offices: New Hudson, South Lyon, Northville, Wixom, and Milford.

The Charter Township of Lyon is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join our Building Department as a full-time Building Inspector.

This position is responsible for enforcing current Michigan Building Codes through plan reviews, field inspections, code interpretation, and assisting residents, contractors, and developers with building-related questions and concerns.

The Lyon Township Library will be closing the current library building on Monday, May 4th to prepare for the new building to open on June 1. We are excited to be working in partnership with LTPL library to help serve their patrons during that time.
From May 4, 2026 – June 1, 2026 LTPL are welcome to:
- Five items per checkout.
- Hotspots from your library will be available at the front desk.
- Digital materials such as Libby & Hoopla will still be available through your library.
- As always, items can be returned to any network library.

Alternating Lane Closures on Milford Road Expected 4/13/26

Upcoming Utility Location Investigation – Milford Road

Exploratory work will take place along the Milford Road right-of-way and within influence of the New Hudson Drain (see image below) beginning Monday, April 13, 2026, to verify the location of underground utilities. This work is anticipated to continue through most of the week.

Crews will be on-site daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM to help minimize traffic impacts during peak travel hours. Temporary traffic control measures will be implemented, including alternating lane closures with flaggers to maintain safety for both workers and motorists.

The work will be performed by Iafrate, the project contractor, who has coordinated with RCOC and MISS DIG in advance of construction activities.

This work is in relation to a Water Resources Commission permit. Please contact WRC at 248-858-0958
