Flood Protection Authority

It is one of the largest flood protection systems in the world. We then reopen all of the floodgates.

The Flood Protection Authority operates and maintains the system that protects the Greater New Orleans region on the east bank of the Mississippi River from floods, storms and hurricanes. How Your Flood Defense System Works:

BEFORE:
Preparation for the next hurricane season always begins the day after the previous season ends. Throughout the year, the Flood Protection Authority inspects, maintains and regularly exercises all components of the flood risk reduction system. Our emergency procedures are consistently updated and we practice “drill runs” by using those procedures to ensure that our employees are prepared to respond to any potential flood threat. DURING:
As a storm approaches, we begin the systematic closing of valves, flood gates, lift gates, and sector gates. During a storm, all of our essential employees stay in safe houses while monitoring each flood protection component to make sure they are operating properly. AFTER:
After the storm has passed and the emergency is over, we systematically inspect all of the flood protection components to determine if any damages occurred and immediately repair them to make sure they are ready for the next threat.

Our FPA Lens is earning national recognition.

The National Association of Flood and Stormwater Management Agencies (NAFSMA) recently highlighted FPA Lens as an example of proactive government transparency, saying Flood Protection Authority-East has “raised the bar” and that the platform “sets a model other infrastructure agencies can follow.”

Launched earlier this year, FPA Lens gives the public real-time insight into infrastructure readiness, financial performance, engineering activity, staffing, environmental conditions and more.

For us, transparency isn’t just about publishing information. It’s about using better information to manage better, make better decisions and strengthen public confidence in the work we do.

As Regional Director L. Jeff Williams put it:

“We are positioning FPA-East as a regional laboratory for modern public-sector management.”

What an incredible Career Fair!

Nearly 250 well-qualified candidates joined us over two days to learn more about Flood Protection Authority–East and opportunities to serve our region. We are grateful to every candidate who attended and to the team members who helped make the event such a success.

The Career Fair may be over, but we are still accepting applications for three positions within our Governmental and Public Affairs Office:

- Communications Specialist – Public Information Officer 2

- Social Media Specialist – Public Information Officer 1

- Public Information Coordinator – Public Information Officer 1

These roles will help strengthen the Authority’s media relations, public communications, digital storytelling, community engagement, events, asset tours, and day-to-day communications support.

FPA-East is taking operational action in response to Tropical Storm Bertha.

FPA-East is actively monitoring Tropical Storm Bertha and implementing operational measures based on forecast conditions and projected water levels to help reduce risk across Orleans, East Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes.

As conditions evolve, our team will continue to monitor the conditions and provide operational updates.

What exactly does FPA-East do?

Simply put, we’re the people working behind the scenes to help reduce the risk of flooding in Greater New Orleans.

Our team spends every day inspecting floodgates, maintaining levees, monitoring conditions, and preparing for whatever Mother Nature sends our way.

Most people only think about risk reduction when a storm is in the forecast. For us, it’s a year-round job.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce you to the people, projects, and systems that help keep our region prepared before, during, and after storms.

Following the release of the Attorney General's report, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting the residents of Orleans, East Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes. Our mission to reduce flood risk, strengthen the organization and maintain the highest standards of public service remains our top priority.

As hurricane season continues, we remain committed to maintaining a safe, reliable, and operationally ready flood protection system while continuing to serve the communities that rely on it.
