Finland is proving once again that sustainability and engineering can go hand in hand. Engineers there have activated the world’s first large-scale sand battery, which stores excess renewable energy by heating sand to temperatures of 500–600°C. This stored heat can then warm buildings during Finland’s harsh winters.

The plant, located in Kankaanpää, is a compact tower filled with 100 tons of low-grade sand. The system uses renewable electricity (mainly wind and solar) to generate heat via resistive heating. Sand’s low heat conductivity makes it ideal for retaining thermal energy for extended periods.

When needed, the heat is extracted using heat exchangers and transferred to the local district heating network. The stored energy can last weeks—a crucial backup when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.

This innovation not only reduces dependence on fossil fuels but also makes renewable power more reliable and cost-efficient in northern climates.
