IMPORTANT UPDATE ON TOWN’S WATER CONDITIONS

The Town of Oakland is aware of the recent water discoloration being experienced by some residents. We want to provide an important update regarding the cause and safety of our water.

The discoloration is being caused by elevated levels of naturally occurring manganese and iron in Broadford Lake, the Town’s primary water source. These elevated mineral levels occur in the raw water before it enters the Town’s treatment process.

The Town’s water treatment process is effectively removing these minerals and continues to meet applicable drinking water standards. However, the increased concentrations in the raw water may still result in temporary discoloration of treated water.

💧 What Residents Need to Know
• The water remains safe to drink and cook with.
• The water remains safe for bathing and other normal household uses.
• This is an aesthetic issue, not a public health issue.
• Residents are advised to postpone doing laundry until the discoloration subsides, as the minerals may cause staining of fabrics.
• Boiling the water will not remove manganese or iron. In fact, boiling may increase the concentration of these naturally occurring minerals as water evaporates.

🔍 What the Town Is Doing
The Town of Oakland Water Department is closely monitoring the water conditions and will continue adjusting treatment and filtration processes as needed to reduce mineral levels.
The Town will also continue sampling and monitoring the water until raw water conditions return to normal.

We understand that discolored water can be concerning and inconvenient. The Town of Oakland appreciates your understanding and patience as our Water Department works to manage these temporary conditions and maintain safe, reliable drinking water for our residents.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
