A Garrett County landmark has earned national recognition!

The Historic Casselman River Bridge in Grantsville has been added to the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, recognizing its connection to the journey of Josiah Henson, whose life inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Built in 1813 as part of the National Road, the Casselman River Bridge has been part of Garrett County’s story for more than two centuries. This new designation adds another chapter to its history while highlighting Garrett County as a destination for heritage tourism.

The recognition also comes as restoration work continues to preserve this iconic landmark for future generations.

It’s another reason to explore the history, heritage, and unique places that make Garrett County special.

Great news for workforce development in Garrett County!

Garrett College has been awarded $50,000 through the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to enhance skilled trades training at its Career Technology Training Center.

The funding will support the purchase of 11 multi-process welders and a band saw for the college’s welding lab, providing approximately 135 students over the next three years with hands-on training using modern, industry-relevant equipment.

Welding continues to be an in-demand skill across manufacturing, construction, infrastructure, utilities, energy, and other industries. This investment will help prepare local students for family-sustaining careers while helping Garrett County employers meet their workforce needs.

Congratulations to Garrett College on this important investment in our students, workforce, and local economy!
