After the Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs were illegal in February, such refunds have been distributed to retailers. In May, the government began issuing the refunds from the $168 billion it collected from 330,000 importers. According to CNN, as of July 31, $100 billion had been distributed.

Dolly Parton wrote “9 to 5” more than 45 years ago, and working people have been singing along ever since.

But there’s a part of Dolly’s story that doesn’t get talked about nearly as much.

She carried a union card.

Dolly joined the American Federation of Musicians Local 257 in Nashville in 1967. And as her career went from local stages to sold-out arenas, movies, awards and becoming one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world, she kept it.

For 58 years.

And it wasn’t just a card in her wallet. Dolly worked under union contracts and made sure the musicians who helped make her music were covered by them, too.

She became an icon. But she never stopped being a working musician.

Maybe that’s why “9 to 5” hit the way it did. She understood something working people have always known: the boss has the power when you stand alone. When you stand together, you’ve got some power, too.

9 to 5. Union for life.

Rest easy, union sister. ❤️

AFSCME Local 2428 is proud to endorse Olivia Sanwong for EBRPD Board Member, Ward 5. Olivia attended our membership meeting on August 3, 2026 to talk to our members and hear their concerns. As a result, the membership overwhelmingly voted to endorse her and support her campaign.

Olivia is highly intelligent and brings critical thinking and analysis to the Park District Board meetings. She isn’t afraid to speak up and ask the hard questions. This is what the public and our workers need in our elected officials.

Please share on your pages and with your friends and families.
