Take a trip back through Marion County in 1965! 🎥🍊

This historic tourism film from the Florida Memory archives features some familiar sights along U.S. Highway 27, including beautiful Silver Springs, roadside citrus stands, and classic “Old Florida” attractions that once brought travelers streaming through Ocala and Marion County on their way south to Miami.

One detail that really stands out: in 1960, the population of Marion County was just 51,616 people!

You’ll spot vintage cars, mid-century tourist culture, orange groves, and the kind of roadside Americana that defined travel before the interstate era.

Today, we celebrate International Dracula Day! Bram Stoker’s original gothic tale "Dracula" was published on May 26, 1897. Did you know it took Stoker seven years to write the novel? The idea for Dracula is speculated to have first come to him in a nightmare, which he later expanded through research into Transylvanian folklore and history. He went back and forth with the manuscript so much that he nearly didn’t finish, worrying that “no one would remember it.” The book was almost titled "Count Wampyr" until he came across the name “Dracula” in the Whitby Public Library while on holiday.

A chilling masterpiece shaped by dreams, doubts, and deep research. Dracula continues to cast his long shadow more than a century later. 🧛‍♂️🦇📖
