Last night’s Capitol Conversations was exactly what these conversations are meant to be. ❤️

Nearly 30 Oklahomans from across the state joined us at the Capitol to talk about the future of public education. We heard from teachers, college students, and parents — each bringing a different perspective, but all sharing the same desire to see Oklahoma students thrive.

Meet Jayla Yarbrough, pictured with Sen. Carri Hicks, D-Oklahoma City. Jayla is an early childhood educator who teaches Pre-K. She joined us to share what class size looks like from the front of a classroom and to ask legislators to protect and enforce the class-size caps established under HB 1017.

For our youngest learners, those numbers aren't just numbers. They affect how much individual attention a teacher can give, how relationships are built, and how children experience their very first years of school. This is why we have these conversations: to listen to the people who live education policy every day.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared their experiences, and reminded us that the best policy conversations start with listening. 💙

Our OKC Vietnamese community is not just part of our city, it is now officially part of our history!

Through the end of the year at the Oklahoma History Center, you can visit “Our Journeys,” a special exhibit telling the story of the Vietnamese community in America and OKC. We cut the ribbon on the exhibit today.

The Oklahoma Senate joins our nation in remembering the tragedy that changed our country 25 years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001. We mourn the lives lost and honor the first responders and others who answered the call to serve in the aftermath of 9/11.

Capitol conversations are starting back up this month! We will have two in-person options in September and November at the State Capitol and two virtual options on Zoom in October and December.

Time to mark your calendars! Thank you to the many who have joined us so far this year for Capitol Conversations. We’d like to invite you to next four installments this Fall focusing on Education, the State Budget, Legislation Ideas, and Concerns ahead of the 2027 Legislative Session.

Education – Sept. 15th 5:30-7:30pm, State Capitol, Room 535

Oklahoma State Budget – Oct. 13th 5:30-7:30pm, Virtual

2027 Legislation: Share Your Ideas – Nov. 10th 5:30-7:30pm, State Capitol Room 535

Pre-Session Concerns – Dec. 1st 5:30-7:30pm, Virtual

Each Capitol Conversation will start with a brief presentation on the meeting’s topic, and then we will open it up for public testimony. In order to allow the meeting to wrap up at 7:30pm, we will have those who want to testify sign up on a first-come first-served basis. There will be time for 30 people at each meeting to offer testimony.

We want to offer as many people as possible the chance to participate in these public meetings, so the October and December Capitol Conversations will be hosted virtually. Details about how to sign up to attend and how to sign up to speak at the virtual Capitol Conversations will be shared in advance of those events.

We look forward to seeing you at the Capitol on Sept. 15th to discuss the state of education!”
