Today we honor the U.S. Constitution and the freedoms, rights and principles that have shaped our nation for more than 200 years.

May we always remember the importance of protecting the liberties that make America great.

What an amazing opportunity we had this morning to join Veterans and community members at Rogers State University for their 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in observance of the 25th anniversary.

Thank you to all who came out and participated in this inaugural event. We look forward to seeing you for those 110 flights next year.

The Oklahoma Senate joins our nation in remembering the tragedy that changed our country 25 years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001. We mourn the lives lost and honor the first responders and others who answered the call to serve in the aftermath of 9/11.

Big news for Rogers State University!

RSU has been approved to offer Oklahoma’s first three-year bachelor’s degree at a regional university. The new Workforce Development degree will prepare students for high-demand careers in advanced manufacturing, automation, cybersecurity, and digital forensics.

After tragedy struck Camp Mystic in Texas last summer, the families forever changed by the flash floods vowed to prevent anything like it from ever happening again. Many of these families channeled their grief into advocating for stronger camp safety and emergency preparedness laws across the country.

House Bill 1675, the summer camp safety bill I worked on this year with Rep. Josh Cantrell, wouldn't have been possible without their advocacy. Yesterday, we celebrated their hard work and honored those who were taken too soon at Camp Mystic with a ceremonial signing of HB 1675. It was truly a bittersweet moment as we gathered together in the Blue Room of the state Capitol. I appreciate all the work members of the Safe Summers Foundation and others put into this bill, which establishes stronger emergency preparedness standards for camps and youth outdoor programs to keep Oklahoma kids safe.

Summer camp is a time for kids to let loose, have fun and just be kids. With these new requirements, no one will have to worry about what happens if severe weather strikes a local summer camp. Every camp and every staffer will be more prepared than ever before.

Thanks to News 9 for having me on to talk about some of the new education laws taking effect later this week. These specific measures are just a few things we passed this year to help move the needle on education outcomes and ensure responsible technology use in the classroom.

Summer camp should be a wonderful experience for kids where all they have to think about is making new friends and lifelong memories. That's why I’m proud to have worked on this bill to keep kiddos safe at Oklahoma summer camps.

This new law improves emergency preparedness requirements for youth camps, so staff are well-equipped to respond to severe weather or any other unexpected situations that may arise over the summer. My heart goes out to the Camp Mystic families who helped advocate for this law here in Oklahoma and similar laws in other states.

House Bill 1675 requires all Oklahoma summer camps and programs to go through a risk assessment and develop emergency plans for any kind of severe weather.
