“I know Mr. Baum personally as a man of great integrity and ability.”
That was how State Senator Carol Liu described me in a letter supporting my reappointment to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.
I had earned support from people who had worked with me from different perspectives, including Anthony Portantino Anthony Portantino, Jack Scott, Chris Holden Chris Holden, Bill Bogaard, Adam Schiff Adam Schiff and former PCC student leader Nick Szamet. They wrote about my collaboration, listening to students and faculty, stewardship of public resources, and a commitment to community colleges.
On January 7, 2015, Senator Liu introduced me at my confirmation hearing before the State Senate Rules Committee. I spoke about rebuilding student access after the Great Recession, expanding the Associate Degree for Transfer, and strengthening career and technical education so community colleges could respond to California’s workforce needs.
The committee voted 4-0 to advance my reappointment. On January 12, I watched remotely as the full State Senate took up the nomination and confirmed me 34-0 to another term on the Board of Governors. The official Senate record confirms the unanimous vote.
Community colleges serve students headed in many different directions: transfer, a certificate, a new career, or simply another chance at an education. My experience on the Board of Governors gave me the opportunity to help shape policies affecting all of them, and I was grateful for the Senate’s unanimous confidence in that work. John Muir High School and PCC Northwest show what innovative partnerships can deliver.

I recently returned to Muir to meet with Principal Dr. Lawton Gray, a Mustang alum, Morehouse Man, and fellow Trojan, and tour PCC Northwest. Through Muir’s Early College and dual-enrollment programs, students can take PCC courses while still in high school, earn college credit and begin building a path to a degree or career.

Congratulations to Dr. Gray, the faculty and staff at Muir and PCC, and the students making the most of this opportunity. This is the kind of partnership we will continue to strengthen across our district.

Andy Wilson has spent years helping Pasadena move forward, both at City Hall and in our technology and startup communities. I’m fortunate to count him as a friend, and grateful to have his endorsement.

As a member of the Pasadena City Council and Vice Mayor, Andy represented Madison Heights and surrounding neighborhoods with intelligence, integrity and a commitment to getting things done.

Andy has also been a driving force behind Pasadena’s emergence as a center for technology and entrepreneurship, bringing together entrepreneurs, researchers, investors and institutions and helping turn new ideas into companies and jobs.

Over the years, I’ve seen how much Andy cares about Pasadena and the people who call it home. His friendship and confidence mean a great deal.

Thank you, Andy, for your support of my campaign for the Pasadena City College Board of Trustees.

And stay tuned. Andy and I will be hosting a special community event in the coming weeks. More details soon.

The banner behind me is on the fence around the new Construction Trades Lab.

Pasadena City College also trains nurses and dental hygienists, the person who runs the X-ray machine, and the EMT who shows up when you call 911.

Every one of those jobs is done differently than it was ten years ago.

The college also teaches skills that were not on a course list then either. Cybersecurity. Photovoltaic design and installation. Stem cell biomanufacturing.

Keeping training current is the college’s job. It decides whether a certificate earned today is still worth something in five years.

“If you do what’s right, the politics take care of themselves.”

Supervisor Kathryn Barger offered this encouragement and wise counsel to candidates running for office at our recent Pasadena Rotary Club meeting.

During her remarks, she gave a detailed update on the Eaton Fire recovery. A building permit in Altadena now takes about 30 days. Before, it took more than six months. More than half the homes destroyed in the fire are being rebuilt. She has gone after insurers that did not honor their policies, and she is working on Charles White Park, Loma Alta Park, and Farnsworth Park.

She also thanked Pasadena Rotary Club Our club put $250,000 toward restoring the Farnsworth Amphitheater, and she said the goal is concerts there again next year. “It is because of the vision, like what you are doing, that is making a difference.”

Ben Sellick introduced our speaker. President Tammy Silver presented her a pair of canvas gardening gloves and a packet of native wildflower seeds from the Arboretum, which suits her yearlong theme built around sustaining friendships and sustaining our community.

Thank you Supervisor Kathryn Barger Your time in the middle of this recovery is no small measure and we are grateful for your service and devotion to our community.

The Statue of Liberty represents hope. Community colleges are one of the places where people can turn that hope into a future.

For generations, people arriving in America have looked at this statue and seen the possibility of a better life.

But opportunity needs a place to begin.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger Arnold Schwarzenegger came to California from Austria, he spoke limited English. He enrolled at Santa Monica College, starting with English as a Second Language and later taking business and other courses.

He went on to become an entrepreneur, an actor and governor of California.

That’s what community colleges can do. They give people a place to start, to learn, and to build a life.

And that’s what Pasadena City College has been doing for generations. 🗽

You walk a high school student into a congressional office, and during the week they figure out that the person behind the desk answers to them.

Being a program instructor for the Close Up - Washington D.C. Educational Programs was my first job out of college.

Then I taught high school English, and I still hold my California teaching credential. Later came leadership roles at Claremont McKenna College and University of Southern California.

Behind me is Blair High School, where students can start taking Pasadena City College classes before they graduate.

Getting students from Pasadena and La Cañada Flintridge into a college that will finish the job is what I have spent my career doing.

That is why I am running for the PCC Board.

Pasadena City College has helped prepare generations of local leaders, and Councilmember Tyron Hampton is among the very best.

Tyron grew up in Pasadena, attended our public schools and began taking classes at PCC while he was still a student at John Muir High School. He went on to Cal Poly Pomona, built a career in his family’s business, served on the Pasadena Unified School District Board and has now served on the City Council for more than a decade.

His commitment to education has been consistent throughout. As a PUSD board member, Tyron pushed for expanded PCC course offerings at John Muir, giving students the chance to begin college while still in high school.

Today, he continues as a co-presenter of the Black Education Expo, founded by Victoria Williams. The free event brings together students, families, educators, colleges, employers and community organizations to connect young people with college and career opportunities, literacy resources, financial education, wellness programs and more. Last year, more than 1,000 people attended.

This year’s Black Education Expo will be Saturday, October 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pasadena Convention Center, and admission is free. If you care about expanding opportunity for our young people, put it on your calendar.

I am proud to have his endorsement for the PCC Board of Trustees and grateful for his friendship, his leadership and his confidence in our campaign.

Thank you, Tyron.
