60 Stories: The Essence of Persistence

Meet Bob, local owner-operator of Sir Speedy of Providence. Bob's father, Anthony Annaldo, worked as a RIPTA bus operator for decades. "He loved two things besides his family. He loved people and driving, and that's what combined the two," Bob recalls fondly.

After returning home from the Korean War, Anthony began driving cabs and later started his own cab company. Hearing about RIPTA's benefits, the dedicated father of four wondered how he might become a bus driver to better support his family. Such a good-paying union job was highly sought after at the time, and Anthony was told he needed to have union connections to get his foot in the door. Not satisfied with that answer, Anthony had another idea.

Every Saturday, he would bring 10-year-old Bob to RIPTA's dispatch office in Providence, where bus operators checked in before starting their shifts.

"On the wall, they had corkboards with all the routes," remembers Bob. "And my father would sit there, he'd get me a drink from the vending machine...and he would write down and study all of the routes."

Then one day, about four months later, a driver called out sick. Anthony was there, and a dispatcher asked if he knew the route for Elmwood Avenue. They gave him a shirt, and he was hired as a driver soon after.

After school, Bob would meet his father at the bus stop and the two would ride the bus together until Anthony's shift ended, chatting and spending time together. Bob estimates that he probably went on 40 to 50 ride-alongs with his father.

"We talked the whole time," says Bob. "It was like having a private session with my father."

On board, Bobby became an unofficial RIPTA employee, helping with paper transfer slips - the pre-digital system by which passengers would show that they had already paid the fare when switching to a connecting bus. The other bus drivers enjoyed having him around too, taking Bob for a spin around the garage if his father was busy looking over a route in the dispatch office.

SERVICE ALERT: Multiple routes will be on detour tomorrow, Sunday, September 13, 2026 to accommodate the Run Rhody Downtown 5K in Providence.

Routes 50, 51, 54, 55, 56, 57, and 72 will be on detour from 6am to 12pm. Routes 1, 14, 17, 19, 33, 34, 35, 60, 78, 92 and the R-Line will be on detour from 9:30am to 11:15am.

New Bus Shelters on Route 54

Route 54 (Lincoln/Woonsocket) will resume serving inbound and outbound bus stops at Route 146 and Sayles Hill Road beginning Monday, September 14, 2026. The restored stops will once again provide residents in the area with convenient access to Route 54 service between Woonsocket, Lincoln and Providence.

The stops have been out of service since September 2023 due to construction in the area and were temporarily closed to ensure the safety of passengers. Route 54 buses will exit Route 146 onto the adjacent service roads to serve the inbound and outbound stops before returning to Route 146. There will be no changes to the Route 54 schedule, and no other bus stops will be impacted.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) worked with RIPTA on the design of the new bus stops and funded their construction and amenities. Improvements include two new bus shelters, two benches and new bus stop signs. Two real-time digital information signs are expected to be installed soon.

PVDFest Detour 🚨

RIPTA will detour all bus routes in the Providence area on Friday, September 18 through Saturday, September 19, 2026, to accommodate PVDFest. All bus stops in Kennedy Plaza, except for Stop X, will be temporarily relocated to Dyer Street during this time.

Which routes will be detoured?
Routes 1, 3, 4, 6, 9X, 10X, 12X, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24L, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 50, 51, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59X, 60, 61X, 65X, 66, 72, 78, 92 and the R-Line will be detoured all day and night beginning with the first trip of the day on Friday through the last trip on Saturday night. Washington Street will be closed during this time. Kennedy Plaza will be closed all day and night for this event.

In the event of rain on Saturday, the detour will be in place on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
