Ask for the Charles Street & Branch Avenue Businesses during the 1950’s in the Italian North End binder researched by Tullio David Pitassi, Ph.D. (2018) which is on loan to Wanskuck Library from the North End Business Association (NENA). The binder is located in the Rhode Island Collection.

A catered reception was held at the Atrium Gallery at One Capital Hill in PVD on Thursday afternoon, August 20, to celebrate Cathren Housley and the Circle of Light exhibit (available for viewing through September 16).

Guest speakers included RISCA’s Arts and Cultural Sustainability Program Director Elena Calderon Patino, RISCA’s Executive Director Todd Trebour, Community Collaborative Teaching Artist Cathren Housley, Community Libraries of Providence Smith Hill Library’s Jennifer Romans, Hattie Ide Chaffee House’s CEO Barry Zeltzer, followed by others on open mic.

Jennifer Romans shared words of appreciation to the community-based artist for her dedication to the participants of multi-site programming series (with extensive can-do spirit) resulting in the visionary Circle of Light exhibit pictured below.

Cathren Housley has provided CLPVD’s 9 locations throughout PVD with more than 15 years of engaging and phenomenal programming, and we look forward to hearing about your next project!!

Painted Lady butterflies are frequent visitors at Wanskuck Library’s People’s Garden. Tomatoes are starting to ripen, cabbages are available, herbs and lots of surprises can be found in the garden beds.
Volunteers are invited to assist with occasional weeding and watering - please stop by to speak with Denise, if interested, and URI-MG Ryan Peters is available in the garden on Thursdays from 5:30-7:30pm to speak with. Today the plan is to spread mulch!

Be part of the democratic process this evening at Wanskuck Library where Providence Eye has scheduled a special meeting for discussion between current Ward 4 Councilman Justin Roias and Assistant to Gov. Dan McKee Joseph Casoli about the North End of Providence.

The North End of Providence encompasses the Charles and Wanskuck neighborhoods and is recognized for its humble beginnings of the Industrial Revolution and historic wave of immigration settlement for those seeking a better, safer life and livelihood not found in their homeland. Pnina Pressburger organized an exhibit followed by a fantastical slideshow with RISD artist extraordinaire Ana Popescu.
The narrative of the slideshow presentation delved deeply into helping attendees understand the process, motivation and representation of each design - and there were plenty of questions prodding more information from Popescu to further explain the how and why of her art.
How does one use a 3D printer with clay as the element? What kind of 3D printer has the capacity to design large-scale projects replicant of European designs found in the Newport mansions? Why and how can designs of hardened clay and multiple firings invoke the harshness and delicacy of the natural world in such consistent and beautiful technique and elegance?
This was truly an exceptional presentation - if attendees can share their thoughts about the exhibit, slideshow and artist, please do, please do describe the universal appeal.
Finally, the artist shared with us a book of her designs as pictured below, and this book is available for anyone to view on the RISD website by searching for Ana Popescu.
