“Turn Around, Don’t Drown” is a national flood safety campaign urging people to avoid driving or walking into floodwaters, as they are extremely dangerous and often deadly.

Why It Matters
Each year, more people die from flooding than from any other thunderstorm-related hazard. The CDC reports that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water, and the next highest percentage is from walking into or near floodwaters.Many deaths are preventable because people underestimate the force of water.

6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult

12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars and small SUVs

2 feet of rushing water can sweep away SUVs and trucks

Water depth is harder to judge at night, so always assume it’s dangerous
Never drive through flooded roads — roadbeds can be washed out, and you may not know the condition under the water
Never walk through moving water — even shallow water can sweep you away

Do not drive around barricades — they are in place for a reason

If you must evacuate, secure your home, turn off utilities if instructed, and move to higher ground

If your car is submerged, unbuckle your seatbelt, unlock your doors, and wait for water to rise to neck level before escaping

If you are in a vehicle and water is rising, climb onto the roof and hold on to something sturdy; if water reaches the top, swim to safety

Emergency Actions
Call 911 immediately if you are in a flooded area

Remember: Whether driving or walking, if you see floodwater, TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN

Pretty nasty storm last night and possibly more storms tonight. Please let the first responders do their job but make it easier on them by staying inside if you can, do not drive in the water, and water in your basement is not an emergency unless electrical, Carbon monoxide alarm is going off or fire is involved. Don't take them away from real emergencies. Yes, storms can be scary but one of the safest places is at home. Of course, if you suspect fire then yes, call 911! We want our first responders safe and calling them for unnecessary things that are inconvenient for you, just takes them away from a real emergency. Please be safe out there! God bless our first responders! Special shout out to Milford Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 for being out there in that storm last night and doing what you do no matter how miserable the weather is...thank you!
