With a hot week ahead please be mindful of any compressed gas cylinders you have. We have some easy tips to remember:

☀️ In the event of an emergency do not attempt to extinguish any flames or explosions, call emergency services immediately and find a safe place to evacuate to
☀️ Store cylinders in a safe and cool place, and allow them to cool before moving
☀️ Keep away from heat sources like out of the sun, away from flames, and out of any hot machinery
☀️ Practice safe handling when moving cylinders by utilizing a dolly or other cart system

Stay safe during this heat and always call 911 in the event of an emergency.

Is Your Pool Gate Safe?

• Your pool gate should be self-closing AND self-latch every time it closes.
• Keep the latch at least 60 inches high—out of a child's reach.
• Never prop the gate open, even for a minute. That’s all it takes for a child or pet to drown.
• A secure gate helps prevent unsupervised access to the pool and drownings.

Secure pool gates are one of the first things our inspector's look for when inspecting public pools and spas, and it's also the law for residential pools (California Swimming Pool Safety Act).

Remember...Pool safety starts with a closed gate. Stay safe this summer!

Household Hazardous Waste 🌟

Did you know that most people generate various small amounts of household hazardous waste? 🤔

considers some leftover household products that can catch fire, react, explode under certain circumstances, or that are corrosive or toxic, are considered a household hazardous waste.

➡️ Household hazardous waste could be any of the following (but not limited to):
Paints, drain cleaners, glue and adhesives, oven cleaners, antifreeze, batteries, electronic wastes, pesticides, household cleaners, pool cleaners, used oil, or wastes containing mercury (e.g. thermometers or fluorescent lights)

🚛 When a fuel spill happens, protecting people and the environment is a team effort.

On Thursday morning, EMD’s 24/7 Hazardous Materials Incident Response Team responded to a big rig crash in Antelope after diesel fuel leaked from the truck and entered a nearby storm drain. Our team worked with Metro Fire, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Sacramento County partners to stop the leak and coordinate cleanup efforts.

From fuel spills to other hazardous materials incidents, EMD is on call 24/7 to help protect our community and the environment.
