From a mixed-status family? You’re not alone, and you have options.

If you're a U.S. citizen or FAFSA-eligible noncitizen and your parent or spouse doesn't have a Social Security number, you may be running into some problems or issues with the FAFSA.

💡 There’s another path:

The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is a safe, state-based way to apply for financial aid, including Cal Grant and campus aid.

🗓️ Apply by Sept 2, 2026 to get the most aid.

Higher education should be within everyone’s reach. Yet so many Californians do not apply for financial aid because they don’t know what opportunities may be available to them.

Today, California officially designated October as Student Financial Aid Awareness Month with the passage of SCR 195, creating a statewide effort to help more students and families access the financial aid they need to pursue higher education.

A special thank you to Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes for authoring and championing this important resolution, which reinforces California’s commitment to college access and affordability.

As FAFSA and the California Dream Act Application open October 1, schools, colleges, and community partners across the state will come together to help every eligible student take the next step toward their educational goals. Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes
