On Tuesday August 18 for our weekly training crews participated in a basic water rescue response training. We focused on proper launching of Marine 1, using the proper ppe, as well as one and two victim extrication from Hinckley Reservoir. All members were then given the opportunity to participate in a water rescue scenario. To conclude the evening, we simulated a 2 person rescue at dusk forcing members to prioritize victims based upon length of exposure, panic level and injury assessment.
The addition of Marine 1 allows for deployment to both major waterways Hinckley Reservoir and Kayuta Lake within the coverage district. Specialized training such as this allows our members to be prepared for the different types of responses that our department is called to. Thank you to the dedicated members who participated.
If you are interested in becoming a member stop at the fire station any Tuesday night at 7:00 and pick up an application. As you can see we do more than just fight fires.

On Tuesday night August 25 for weekly training members were dispatched to a simulated rescue call behind the fire station involving a male and a child who were on a riding lawnmower that had rolled over. Members responded with the rescue arrived on scene and treated the situation as though it was a real emergency. They encountered a child trapped under a riding lawnmower. Members practiced using the air bags to lift the mower off of the child and remove them from under the mower. Following that they practiced lifting various objects that had fallen on top of or that a small child could become stuck under.
Scenarios such as these allow our members to practice proper lifting, stabilizing and removal techniques from different situations that responders could be called to.
Specialized rescue situations such as these are just one of the many different types of responses the department responds to.

On Tuesday July 21 at approximately 19:21 as members were attending our weekly training session at the station we were dispatched with Forestport FD to a reported structure fire on Trestle Road. Engine 3 (D/C Helmer) was out the door in under 3 minutes with a full interior crew. Tanker 2 (D/C Stirling), Rescue 1 (Lt. Green), Tanker 1 (A /C Eaton) & Engine 1 (Capt. Smith) quickly followed behind.
Upon arrival of Forestport FD it was determined that it was a large pile of tires and assorted debris on fire in the rear of an auto repair shop which was exposing the rear of the structure to significant heat.
Upon arrival on scene Engine 3 was assigned to the rear of the structure for fire attack. 3 - 1 3/4” handlines were placed in operation for fire attack and exposure protection. After the fire was brought under control one handline was transitioned to a foam line for overhaul and additional extinguishment.
Crews spent approximately 2 hours on scene performing extensive overhaul and checking for hot spots completely extinguishment. Tankers 1 & 2 provided water supply and personnel from Engine 1 & Rescue 1 provided additional manpower on scene.
In addition to Remsen and Forestport, also responding were Woodgate, Otter Lake, & Stittville Fire Departments, Northstar ambulance, Oneida County Car 13, NYS Police and Oneida County Sheriff.
