Most people don’t realize they’re in an abusive relationship… until they already are.

Abuse rarely starts with a punch—it often begins with charm, big apologies, and “small” red flags like jealousy, control, or a temper that gets explained away as stress, alcohol, or a rough past. It’s normal to make excuses for someone you care about, and it can feel heartbreaking (and even shameful) to admit what’s really happening.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d never stay,” you’re not alone—and staying doesn’t mean you’re weak. It often means the cycle has been confusing, gradual, and designed to keep you second-guessing yourself. (domesticshelters.org).

Latina women experience domestic violence at disproportionately high rates, and too often, their voices go unheard. Language barriers, immigration status, cultural stigma, and limited access to resources can leave survivors feeling isolated and afraid to seek help. The Lighthouse believes that everyone deserves safety, dignity, and support, no matter your background, language, or story.

Please reach out for confidential help or support at any time: 251-947-6008 (24/7).

We have been busy in the community over the past few weeks and are grateful for the opportunity to increase awareness of our services and resources. Our team members have attended:
The Employee Benefits Fair at Baldwin EMC
The Get On Board Days at Coastal Alabama Community College (Fairhope, Bay Minette and Brewton campuses)
The Community Strong Family Festival in Elberta
as well as providing trauma-informed response training to Fairhope Police Department

Thank you to our community partners who help us spread awareness, strengthen safety, and reduce risks for those who may be facing harm.

The Lighthouse will be participating at this event on Saturday, September 26th. Make plans to come and join us.

These are a few simple ways that survivors of domestic violence can help themselves to heal from the abuse that they have endured. Affirmations will help to reprogram the mind while physical activity will allow the trauma to be released from the body.

If you or a loved one is a victim or a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault please reach out for help. Our lines are open 24/7.
