If you had $5 to spend at the Westside Farmers Market, what would you spend it on? A bean pie? A pound of frozen grassfed beef? Lemonade? A pint of cherry tomatoes? On September 1, 2026, 94 college students from the Greater Rochester community convened for the market’s annual College Night, an event that incentivizes college students to get off campus and engage with local vendors and residents in the best grocery shopping party in the city. Of the 94 students who signed in, 69% indicated that it was their first time at the Westside Farmers Market.

This year’s event was co-sponsored by Neighbors in Action and the University of Rochester Center for Community Engagement, highlighting the market’s identity as a critical third space where residents and students can find a sense of community and belonging. Table demonstrations from student clubs including Food Recovery Network, Rotaract Rochester, and Community Comfort also added to this year’s event by highlighting local students who are leading their peers in sustainability and community care.

A few weeks ago, we held our closing ceremony for both the Rochester Youth Year (RYY) and Urban Fellows’s (UF) programs.
It was so rewarding to celebrate our fellows for their accomplishments and contributions at their respective host sites, as well as their dedication, resilience, and eagerness to make a positive impact in the community.
We are so incredibly proud of each of them, and we wish them continued success in their endeavors.
A special thank you to our donors, AmeriCorps, University leaders, ResLife, community partners/leaders, faculty, alums, and everyone who contributed in any capacity to make these programs possible.
