The Center for Community Engagement (formerly the Rochester Center for Community Leadership) educates students to become engaged citizens and leaders capable of effecting positive social change in their communities. Through sustainable university and community partnerships, the Center develops initiatives that cultivate the skills, experiences and resources necessary to achieve innovative solutions to complex societal issues. The Center coordinates initiatives in the areas of leadership, civic engagement and community service, and connects students with communities on campus, throughout Rochester, across the country and around the world. Professor Laura Whitebell will present on her course, Critical Reading, Reasoning, and Writing, a place-based and community-engaged writing course that gives students the opportunity to explore the deep human and ecological history of the UR campus, with particular emphasis on the area’s Haudenosaunee roots, as they consider, “What does it mean to have a place in history, an ecosystem, a classroom, and a community?” This course is developed in collaboration with the Ganondagan State Historic Site, Digital Scholarship, Studio X, Rare Books and Special Collections, and Horticulture and Grounds.

Whether you use the bridges regularly for walking, bicycling, commuting, or recreation, or simply have an interest in their history and future, we encourage you to share your experiences.

Monroe County is leading multi-agency committee to assess the century old pedestrian bridges and recommend long term use and maintenance plans. Join us to learn more about the historic pedestrian bridges in Genesee Valley Park and share your experiences using these structures.

The meeting will include an informational open house from 5 to 7pm where attendees can learn about the project, ask questions, and provide feedback on how the bridges are used today and what should be considered for their future.

An optional, guided walking tour will begin at 5:00 pm, offering participants an opportunity to visit the westernmost pedestrian bridge and discuss its history, use, and connections to the surrounding trail network. Beginning at the parking lot at the Genesee Waters Center, the walk will follow approximately 1,800 feet (one-third of a mile) of accessible, paved trail to one of the pedestrian bridges.

Early voting starts this Saturday, October 24, in New York State! Those registered to vote in Monroe County can vote early at a polling site across the river at the Staybridge Suites Hotel at 1000 Genesee Street. It’s also not too late to register to vote in New York State: eligible citizens can register to vote through this Saturday and still cast a ballot in this election cycle.

Community Engagement Challenge grants support projects that build and strengthen ties between the University and the City of Rochester. Funds may be used to cover the cost of transportation, materials for a community service project, or the cost of training that will help an organization improve its ability to engage with our community.

Many students know Henry Padrón from his Latine activism and co-ownership of Hipocampo Books on South Ave. But the Padrón Papers also reveal much more about his years as a teacher in the Rochester City School District, his poetry, and his work with the Young Lords Party in New York City. All these materials are now available for students and researchers to study.

This is the first acquisition and preservation of a Puerto Rican collection by the University of Rochester! Don Henry has specifically asked for students to come through and enjoy the food and community-making. Please join us at 6 pm this Friday and bring a friend!
