For Hispanic Heritage Month, I had the opportunity to visit two Latino-owned businesses in East County and hear directly from the people behind them.

Dr. Jose Arroyo has been a Montgomery County business owner for 25 years. His dental practice serves residents throughout our community, with a particular commitment to underserved and Spanish-speaking patients.

At La Mixteca 2, I heard how Ana Osorio began selling Spanish food from a van in the early 1990s, when many of the products her community was looking for were difficult to find locally. What she started then has grown into a family business serving customers from many different backgrounds.

These visits are a chance to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, but they’re also an opportunity to listen to our small business owners and learn about their experiences. I appreciate Dr. Arroyo, Ana and their families for welcoming us and for the work they do in Montgomery County.

Yesterday, I joined the County Council, former County Executive Ike Leggett and many others to celebrate Montgomery County’s 250th anniversary. Thank you to the Council for inviting me and to everyone who has worked to bring our anniversary celebrations together.

As I said yesterday, we have a history to be proud of, but we also have to be honest about the parts of our history that weren’t fair or equal. It wasn’t that long ago that Montgomery County had segregated schools and racial restrictions on who could own or rent a home. We’re not the County we were 60 years ago, and that’s something worth recognizing.

One of the things that makes Montgomery County remarkable is how much we’ve changed. People from all over the world have made this County their home, and we’ve worked to make sure everyone has a place at the table. As Ike has said, when the table isn’t big enough, you make a bigger table.

So this anniversary isn’t just about looking back at 250 years. It’s about what kind of place we’re building for the next 250. If we keep investing in one another, welcoming new neighbors and making sure everyone has a seat at the table, I think our best chapters are still ahead of us.

Last night, we came together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and recognize the people, cultures and traditions that contribute so much to Montgomery County.

I joined members of our Latin American Advisory Group for a conversation about the work we’ve done together, from supporting families during the pandemic and expanding housing protections to strengthening trust and partnerships with our Latino community. We also recognized community members whose service continues to make Montgomery County stronger.

Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and I’m grateful to everyone who joined us to celebrate our shared history and continue building our future together.

Flu season is here, and I got my flu shot today alongside Chief Administrative Officer Rich Madaleno and Deputy CAO Fariba Kassiri. Getting vaccinated is a simple way to help protect yourself and the people around you this fall and winter.

Earlier today, I joined County partners to break ground on a new child care facility at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Park. This modern, safe space will give children a better place to learn and grow while giving families peace of mind.

From preserving existing affordable homes to building new ones near transit, we’ve made housing affordability a priority. Since FY19, County investments have helped produce or preserve more than 10,000 affordable homes. Yesterday, I was proud to celebrate 163 more at The Chimes.
