Maryland's Tax-Free Week is back, Montgomery County! Now through Saturday, August 15, clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item are exempt from the 6% state sales tax. The first $40 of backpacks is tax-free too. Perfect timing for back to school shopping. Save money and shop local!

During the week, certain items, such as clothing and shoes, are exempt from sales tax.

I am heartbroken by the loss of William Vance Payne II, a husband, father, and public servant who was killed Tuesday morning in a collision in Germantown while driving to work. Mr. Payne was 58 years old. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, his colleagues at the National Institute of Standards & Technology, and to the congregation of Berryville Baptist Church, which has lost a valued member.

Seven young people were also hospitalized following this collision --I have them and their families in my prayers as well. The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is conducting its investigation, and any charging decisions will rest with the State's Attorney's Office. I trust that investigation will be swift, thorough, and transparent, and my team will be monitoring it closely.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, Dr. William Vance Payne II was a father of five who died en route to work.

In 2019, I cosponsored Resolution 19-24, establishing Montgomery County's Commission on Remembrance and Reconciliation. I said then that if we ever hope to end systemic racism and injustice, we must understand and confront our history.

That work continues today through historical markers, soil collections from lynching sites, and programming that brings neighbors into honest conversation about who we have been and who we intend to be.

The County Executive's office is now accepting applications for public seats on the Commission. Members serve without compensation and meet virtually on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Applications require a letter of interest and a resume, and are due Wednesday, August 19:

This week, a county resident told me that their family received notice of a preliminary settlement in a case alleging that numerous defendants, including companies with operations in Montgomery County, conspired to fix and inflate the price of multifamily rental housing. The defendants deny the allegations of wrongdoing.

A notice like that turns an abstract issue into a concrete one. Algorithmic price-fixing is playing out in courts all over the country, and it has tangible local impact for renters here.

I look forward to seeing the Montgomery County Council follow Rockville's lead and enact my bill to ban price-fixing algorithms. Thank you to Mayor Ashton and the Rockville Council for their leadership on this.

A committee session is expected this fall (date to be confirmed), followed by a vote of the full Council. Stay tuned.
