Q: I was charged a bag fee of $0.10 when I picked up my groceries at the store. The store also charged me sales tax on the bag fee. Is that right?



A: No. The amount charged by retailers when they provide their customers with certain carryout bags is not subject to tax and should not be included in the retailer’s gross receipts for sales tax reporting purposes, even when itemized on receipts. https://cdtfa.ca.gov/industry/grocery-stores/industry-topics.htm
