We are proud to share that The Texas Markers Project has recognized cave developer Jack Charles Burch.

The Texas Markers Project recognizes over 345 individuals, groups, technologies, and events that have shaped conservation in the state. The overall goal of the project is to make it easier for Texans to learn about the history of conservation, to explore these places, and to understand how past efforts continue to influence the stewardship of natural resources and public health today.

Jack Burch grew up exploring caves in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma. In 1957, he visited what was then know as the Mayfield Cave near Sonora, Texas. Together with fellow caver James Papadakis and the Mayfield family, he developed what became known as the Caverns of Sonora. When it opened to the public in 1960, it brought a novel way of both sharing and protecting the cave’s marvels, using carefully installed walkways and lighting and humidity controls to celebrate, yet guard, the cave’s delicate stalactites, stalagmites, and helictites. Carrying on the same idea of conservation through commercialization, Burch worked with our Wuest family to develop our cavern.

We have always felt strongly that Jack's work deserves every possible recognition - his approach protected caves that could otherwise have been lost to development above ground. It takes a visionary to find a way to save these underground wonders. We count ourselves blessed to have Jack as part of our caverns story.

But just a few years ago we had to scramble over boulders under the massive breakout dome. In the first photo you can see our team examining the spot we'd drill through in a matter of hours. The second shot is how it looks today. It's been an incredible journey - with more fun coming up soon!
