We honor Willie Mays's legacy as a trailblazing athlete, generous philanthropist, and community leader. In addition to providing support through his Say Hey Foundation for many years, he regularly made it possible for our youth and program staff to attend San Francisco Giants games. He also met with them when attending games and took an interest in visiting with each child and teen to learn about their interests and dreams. We honor his legacy and commitment to providing youth positive opportunities and safer communities.

Thank you to Edgewood Board Member Carrie Johnson for her energetic and creative efforts to raise awareness and support our programs. In March, she was an exhibitor at the 58th Edgewood Fair with her hand-made quilts, which the guests purchased and were delivered as comfort items for youth served by our Crisis Stabilization Unit.

Carrie is now coordinating our second Edgewood Open, which will include tennis and pickleball to raise funds for the Crisis Stabilization Unit. Join us on Saturday, June 8th, for a day of fun that will support the life-saving services of the Edgewood Crisis Stabilization.

Friday afternoons are special at Edgewood because that is the day Zay, a White Swiss Shepherd (Berger Blanc Suisse), comes to visit our Vicente Street campus. He has the day off today to celebrate his fourth birthday with his family. Thank you to Zay and his dog mom Anne Magill for bringing so much joy every time they come to visit.

💕Happy Valentine's Day!💕The Edgewood Auxiliary made spreading love and kindness a family affair at a craft event to make Valentine's notes for the youth and staff at Edgewood. It was a wonderful event connecting Auxiliary members' kids to their work supporting Edgewood. It's never too early to make a difference in someone's life and give back. ❤️

This Valentine's Day, show your love by helping families stay together.

Edgewood pioneered the first-ever Kinship Support Network in the nation. Since then, our model has been replicated in every state of the country. Today, Edgewood provides services and financial support to over 300 Kinship caregivers and youth across San Francisco, San Mateo, and Contra Costa counties.
Edgewood’s Kinship support services are life-changing for the child and for the caregiver as well. 95% of children who benefit from Edgewood's Kinship program remain in their family unit until the age of 18. Caregivers who receive support from Edgewood report an 80% improvement in their overall health.

Let’s keep kids out of foster care and in the arms of families who love them. They need our support. Please donate today and help our children thrive in Kinship Families and successfully transition into adulthood. edgewood.org/donate/

Happy New Year! Edgewood Center is looking forward to great things in 2024 as we continue the expansion of our programs and services. This year also marks several milestone anniversaries -- the tenth anniversary of our 24/7 Crisis Stabilization Unit, the 20th anniversary of the Grace Magill Fund, the 75th anniversary of the Edgewood Auxiliary, and the centennial of our Vicente Street campus. Watch for updates and announcements as we help more youth and families to experience understanding, confidence, strength, and joy.

It's not too late to make your tax-deductible contribution to Edgewood Center for 2023. All contributions postmarked or made online before midnight December 31 are tax deductible for 2023.

The need has never been greater. This month, CNBC reported that youth su***de rose by 62% from 2007 to 2021. But there is reason for hope -- Edgewood is expanding its programs and services to help youth and families to heal, recover, and thrive.

We invite you to join us in achieving Edgewood's vision – for everyone we serve to have the power to live life with understanding, confidence, strength, and joy. Our generous supporters play an essential role in helping us realize this vision. Please renew your support by December 31 so we can plan appropriately to provide our vital services in 2024! In 2024, the Edgewood Crisis Stabilization Unit will mark a decade of serving the mental health needs of our community's youth. The only service of its kind in San Francisco, the Crisis Stabilization Unit, is open 24/7 and will be available throughout the holiday season. It has served over 3,000 children and youth over the past decade. Over the past two decades, youth su***de has increased by 62%, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Members of Generation Z, now ages 11 to 26, came of age during the global pandemic that was isolating and interrupted their formative years, which took a devastating toll on their mental health.

The Crisis Stabilization Unit is here to serve the mental health needs of this generation and is a vital resource for their well-being. Please consider renewing your support today so that Edgewood can continue providing this life-saving service. Link in bio or visit edgewood.org/donate/

With rain in the forecast and the official start of winter coming next week, today was a perfect, sunny day for our youth to have an outdoor pizza party in our garden with games, crafts and live music. Thanks to duo Jimbo Trout through Whippoorwill Arts for a performance in our Garden Learning Center as everyone enjoyed a little California mid-December sun.

Edgewood Center is committed to providing cutting-edge mental health services that respond to the needs of the youth and families of our community. We also value being a part of San Francisco from its earliest days as a city. We are honored to be included in "Oldest San Francisco" by Alec Stone, chronicling our community's most historic institutions. We have evolved with the needs of the community over the decades, but from our beginning, Edgewood has been here to respond to the most vulnerable youth and families so that they can thrive.

Edgewood Center was honored to be selected as the philanthropic partner at this year's Holiday Mix and Mingle of the San Francisco chapters of the Public Relations Society of America and the American Marketing Association. Thank you to the Wender Weis Foundation for Children for allowing youth, parents and caregivers served by our San Francisco Family Resource Center to attend their annual Holiday Heroes event this evening at Oracle Park. Holiday Heroes is an inclusive environment where children and families from every background enjoy once-in-a-lifetime moments together. The event seeks to inspire, motivate and delight. This year's celebrity guests include Misty Copeland, Danel Cormier, and Gabe Kapler.

1/3 of attendees are sponsored families. For some, this will be their only celebration this holiday season, and the gifts they receive at our event will be the only ones they enjoy.

We are grateful to have partnered with the Wender Weis Foundation for Children for almost a decade. Thank you for brightening the holidays for our youth and families!

One of the most rewarding things at Edgewood Center this year has been welcoming back in-person volunteers. From joining clients in the garden, throwing parties celebrating various holidays, and remodeling our pizza oven, volunteers help enhance the Edgewood experience for everyone. Today, on International Volunteer Day, we celebrate all of our volunteers who have done so much to further our mission throughout 2023.

Here is how volunteer Edith Jones, describes her experience: “I enjoy working with the clients; seeing their joy as they grow, nourish, and harvest in the garden brightens my day. Having a space and activity in which the clients can participate, whether they want to garden or just sit and enjoy being outside, is very rewarding to both of us. I am both happy and saddened when a client goes home because I will miss them but am happy that they are at a place where they can return home.”

Observed annually on December 1 since 1988, World AIDS Day allows the global community to unite with one voice to commemorate the people who have lost their lives to AIDS, show support for people living with and affected by HIV, and raise awareness for the continued importance of HIV prevention, care, and treatment. Today, we remember the more than 36 million people globally, including over 700,000 people in the United States, who have died from AIDS-related illness since the start of the HIV epidemic. We honor the progress the global community has made in the fight against HIV in the past 42 years while also recommitting to the worldwide effort to end the HIV epidemic.

TRANSFORMING LIVES. RESTORING HOPE.

Founded in San Francisco in 1851 as a refuge for orphans of the Gold Rush, Edgewood is the oldest children’s nonprofit in the western U.S. Today, Edgewood operates residentially-based, community-based, and school-based programs throughout San Francisco, San Mateo, and Alameda counties, among others.

Edgewood Center for Children and Families has a bold vision: Success is within the reach of every child. Children deserve a safe place free from abuse and neglect where they can learn and grow.

By taking an individual and family-centered approach, Edgewood is able to help thousands of children, youth, and their families each year who are struggling with mental health challenges, achieve their potential.
