For many of the seniors we serve, the knock on the door from a Meals on Wheels driver is the most meaningful moment of their day.
Two-thirds of Meals on Wheels San Francisco clients live alone. More than 40% of seniors across the country experience loneliness on a regular basis, according to a University of California San Francisco study. And the health consequences are serious, research shows social isolation is associated with a 35% increase in mortality risk, with effects on the body comparable to smoking or obesity.
Fourteen percent of seniors receiving home-delivered meals report having no one to call for help. Twenty percent have contact with a friend or family member less than once a month.
