Bay Area Air District

Bay Area Air District The Bay Area Air District is the country's first regional air pollution control agency. The California Legislature created the Air District in 1955.

The Air District is tasked with regulating stationary sources of air pollution in the nine counties that surround San Francisco Bay: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma counties. It is governed by a 24-member Board of Directors composed of locally elected officials from each of the nine Bay Area counties, with the numbe

r of board members from each county being proportionate to its population. Read about current rules in your community at http://www.baaqmd.gov/rules-and-compliance/current-rules and join in on the conversation at http://www.baaqmd.gov/in-your-community/open-air

The Air District Board of Directors has approved amendments to Rule 11-18 to reduce delays in efforts to decrease toxic air pollution at Bay Area facilities with the highest potential health risks.

🏭 Under Rule 11-18, facilities with elevated pollution-related health risks are required to take action to reduce those risks and limit harmful emissions. The updates streamline the development and implementation of health risk assessments and risk reduction plans, helping move health protections forward more efficiently for communities impacted by toxic air contaminants.

✅ The amendments require facilities to prepare the initial draft health risk assessment, using their detailed knowledge of site operations to identify priority emissions sources earlier in the process. The Air District will continue to review and approve the assessments to ensure they meet regulatory and public health requirements.
