Child Passenger Safety Week

The CHP is dedicated to promoting child passenger safety and ensuring every child is correctly secured during every trip. National Child Passenger Safety Week focuses on educating parents and caregivers about the importance of proper car seats and providing the right fit for a child’s age, weight, and height.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children in the U.S., but proper use of child safety seats significantly reduces the risk of injury and fatality. The CHP offers free car seat inspections and hands-on training year-round, with trained experts available to assist.

California Law:

✅Under 2 years: Must ride in a rear-
facing car seat unless they weigh 40
pounds or are 40+ inches tall.

✅ Under 8 years old: Must ride in a car
seat or booster seat in the back seat.

✅8 years or older, or 4’9” or taller: If a
child meets all the requirements of the
5-Step test then they may ride in a seat
belt without a booster seat.

✅ Drivers can be fined and get
a point on their driving record for each
unbuckled child under 16.

It’s National “See Tracks? Think Train” Week!

Do you about the blue-and-white sign at every railroad crossing? 🔵⚪

The Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign provides a phone number and crossing ID to report problems or emergencies at the crossing.

If your vehicle gets stuck on the tracks, get out immediately, move away from the tracks, and call the number on the sign to get trains stopped. If you can’t find the sign, call 9-1-1.

Know the sign and know what to do. Stay safe around railroad tracks.

Come celebrate with us this Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Madonna Meadows!

This FREE community event is a chance to spend the day with local law enforcement, first responders, and community partners. Meet the teams who serve SLO County, check out the vehicles and equipment they use, and get hands-on with the people and resources that help keep our community safe.

🚜🌽 We’re Back at the Downtown San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market!

The California Highway Patrol Coastal Division is back at the Downtown San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market promoting car seat safety and car seat education.

Car seat laws change often and if you are interested in current laws the CHP and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has all the current information. You can always call your local highway patrol office for a car seat inspection to make sure the seat is installed correctly.

If you’re in the area, stop by our booth! We’d love to see you. We coloring books, safety materials, and helpful information regarding car seat safety and laws.

Due to the re-route of traffic from this mornings incident in Paso Robles , please be advised:

➡️ SB Hwy 101 is CLOSED from 17th street to South Spring
➡️ Spring street has heavy traffic
➡️ North River Rd has heavy traffic
➡️ South River Rd has heavy traffic
➡️ Vine street and Ramada have heavy traffic.
➡️ SB 101 at 46 exit extremely backed up. SIG alert issued.

Please be patient and cautious of other drivers.
Plan for the delay, leave earlier than planned.

Please avoid the area, due to regency personnel in the area for vehicle pursuit and with report of shots fired. Traffic being diverted off 17th street southbound.
