“My name is Kenny, and I'm a person in long-term recovery.
I used to be Kenny the son, Kenny the friend, Kenny the athlete, Kenny with endless potential. As my addiction progressed, those identities slowly disappeared. I became Kenny the addict, Kenny the one everyone worried about, Kenny who couldn't stop no matter how badly he wanted to. Addiction didn't just take away my freedom—it took away my purpose, my relationships, and the person I knew I could be.
For years, I lived believing I wasn't worth saving. I burned bridges, hurt the people I loved most, and convinced myself that this was simply who I was. But recovery gave me something I never thought possible: a second chance.
Today, I have over 11 years in recovery, and while addiction will always be a part of my story, it no longer defines the limits of my life—it defines the purpose behind it.
Today, I serve as the Community Outreach Coordinator for Recovery Team Newton, where I have the privilege of helping individuals and families find hope and access treatment. I own Patty's Sanctuary Sober Living, creating safe, supportive housing for men beginning their recovery journey. I proudly serve as Vice President of the Board of Directors at Jeremiah's Inn in Worcester—the same halfway house where I graduated during my own recovery—and I use my voice as a poet to share the realities of addiction, recovery, and hope.
Recovery has given me a relationship with my family, a career built on service, and a life I once believed was impossible. My greatest purpose is to show others that recovery isn't just about putting down drugs or alcohol, it's about rebuilding a life worth living.
If sharing my story helps even one person believe that change is possible, then every challenge I faced has become part of something greater than myself.”

What Families Living With Addiction Wish You Understood.

If addiction has never entered your home, you may see the dysfunction and wonder, Why they don't just walk away. Why do they keep helping? Why can't they make them stop?

What you might not see are the sleepless nights, the unanswered calls, or the fear that every knock at the door could bring devastating news.

You don't see them grieving someone who is still alive--missing who their loved one was before they became sick and desperately hoping they'll find their way back.

You may mistake their boundaries for cruelty, their exhaustion for indifference, or their silence for shame. But most families have spent years loving, pleading, rescuing, forgiving, breaking- and getting back up to love again.

What these families need isn't judgment or advice about what they should do.

They need compassion. They need support. They need someone willing to sit beside them in the uncertainty and say, "I might not understand your journey, but I'm here to listen."

So before you judge a family for how they're surviving, remember: they're learning to hold hope in one hand and heartbreak in the other--and somehow they keep choosing love.

Parents Supporting Parents is seeking individuals willing to share their personal story of recovery, strength, and HOPE with families impacted by substance use.
We meet every Monday evening at 6:30 PM in a hybrid format—either in person in Sandwich or virtually through Zoom.
Speakers must have at least two years of solid sobriety and feel comfortable sharing their journey to help inspire others.

“My name is Shannon, I’m an addict. I used to be Shannon the athlete, Shannon the teacher, Shannon the daughter, the friend, ext… By the time I graduated high school, I was Shannon the drunk, Shannon the ju**ie, labeled as dangerous, ext… I struggled with denial and acceptance for the better part of a decade. The commonwealth of Massachusetts deemed me unfit for society. My mother had a restraining order on me. Holding a job was out of the question.

Today, yes, I am still an addict- I always will be– but it means so much more than scrounging for change or chasing the next hit. I give back to my community, I have a relationship with my mother, and my addiction has given me the opportunity to be so much more than I could have ever imagined.”

💜 Join Us for International Overdose Awareness Day 💜

On Monday, August 31, 2026, at 5:30 PM, we invite you to join us at Smugglers Beach, South Yarmouth for an evening of remembrance, hope, and healing.

Together, we will honor the lives of those lost to substance use, support those still struggling, and remind every family that they are not alone.
Please bring a large photo of your angel and a beach chair as we create a beautiful beach memorial together.

The evening will include:

💜 Angel Memorial

Addiction Is Not A Parenting Failure

You cannot make someone addicted. And yet, parents often torture themselves with questions like:

Was I too strict?
Was I too lenient?
Did I love too much—or not enough?
What did I do to cause this?

But addiction isn't something one person can give to another.

Substance Use Disorder is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interaction between brain chemistry, genetics, environment, and life experiences. Some people are born with a greater biological vulnerability, and repeated substance use can change the brain's systems responsible for reward, stress, judgment, motivation, and self-control.

A parent cannot reach inside their child's brain and create those changes.

You may influence your child, just as every parent does. Family, experiences, trauma, peers, mental health, and access to substances can affect risk- but risk is not the same as cause.

Children raised in loving homes can develop addiction.
Children raised in painful homes may never develop it.
Siblings raised by the same parents can have completely different outcomes.

This doesn't mean families don't make mistakes. We all do.

It also doesn't mean harmful behavior should be overlooked.

Addiction may explain lying, manipulation, anger, and poor judgment- but it doesn't excuse abuse or remove responsibility.

Parents can stop carrying blame while still changing how they respond.

You can set boundaries.
You can stop rescuing.
You can refuse to fund addiction.
You can offer treatment and healthy support.
You can protect yourself while still loving your child.

Your child's addiction is not a sign of failure.

You didn't cause the disease.
You can't control it.
You can't cure it

But you can lead the way...

Families can recover too.

You can release the shame, learn healthier ways to respond, stop beating yourself up, and reach out for support.

Addiction is not a parenting failure. It's a medical disease--and no family should have to face it alone.
