Back-to-school season is a chance to celebrate the educators, organizers, and young people who continue shaping Seattle’s future. We honor Roberta Byrd Barr, whose leadership in education and advocacy helped advance a more equitable path for generations to come.

That legacy lives on through community learning and shared action. Schools can join us in volunteering at our market, helping distribute groceries alongside neighbors. Through our partnership with Hip Hop Is Green, students can also learn to grow food that will be shared through our market.

This school year, let’s make room for learning that connects classrooms, community, and possibility. Visit our website to explore ways to get involved and make back-to-school season meaningful.

We are honored to welcome Dr. Michael Eric Dyson as the special guest speaker for this year's Legacy in Motion Gala.

For decades, Dyson's scholarship and public advocacy have examined the intersections of race, class, politics, and culture, along with the structural forces that shape opportunity in Black communities. His work closely connects with Byrd Barr Place's commitment to racial and economic justice, Black community empowerment, and the ongoing work of creating more equitable systems.

His perspective also speaks directly to this year's theme: Unity: Rooted. Rising. Revolution. Dyson connects present-day racial justice work to the history and legacy of Black leaders while challenging us to consider what justice requires today. Because meaningful unity is more than simply coming together. It must be grounded in justice and carried forward through collective action.

That makes Dr. Dyson a powerful voice for an organization rooted in more than 60 years of Black community leadership and committed to building a more just Seattle.

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow within a connected community. Families already carry deep knowledge about what matters most for their children. Sometimes, finding the right information and community connection can help open new pathways.

Through Community Connector, families can explore resources including child care, transportation, health care, and more. We believe strong communities are built through connection, shared knowledge, and partnerships that help families navigate the opportunities available to them.

What does a connected community look like for your family? Share your thoughts with us, then visit the link in our bio to explore Community Connector resources.

Healthy beginnings deserve room to grow. Black Breastfeeding Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate the many ways Black families nurture their babies and honor the choices parents make for their families. Every family’s journey is different, and every baby deserves nourishment, love, and the opportunity to thrive.

Through the Good Black Birth Initiative, we’re working alongside families and communities to create more supportive birth experiences and strengthen access to the knowledge and resources families can use from the start. This week, we’re celebrating the parents, babies, and communities at the heart of that work. Learn more about the initiative and discover how you can help support healthier beginnings for Black families.
