We are one of Washington’s oldest community organizations, and our programs serve more than 20,000 people a year. For the next year you can visit us at 420 E.

Byrd Barr Place relies on community support and donations to provide families with basic human needs so we can break the cycle of poverty, Byrd Barr Place has temporarily moved our operations. Our building (Fire Station 23) on 18th and Cherry is undergoing significant renovations. Pike to seek food bank services and speak with a client advocate about your Energy Assistance Application.

Every year, Byrd Barr Place’s annual Turkey Giveaway helps bring holiday meals to families across Seattle. Through partnerships with local churches and childcare centers, we work together to reach more households and strengthen the community connections that make this tradition possible.

This is what community care looks like: neighbors, local organizations, and community partners coming together to make the season meaningful for more families. Each partnership helps carry the spirit of sharing, connection, and togetherness into homes across Seattle.

Our 2026 Turkey Giveaway is happening November 21 and 23! Stay tuned for more details on when and how to get your turkey voucher. One turkey per family. A free hot meal will also be available while supplies last.

In Loving Memory of Ms. Elma Horton
It is with heavy hearts that we honor the life and legacy of our dear Elma Horton.
For more than 20 years, Ms. Horton served on our Board of Directors during our years as the Central Area Motivation Program, and even as our name changed to Byrd Barr Place, her love for this organization never did. She remained one of our greatest cheerleaders, always offering encouragement, wisdom, and a deep belief in the importance of serving and uplifting our community.
Her commitment to service extended far beyond Byrd Barr Place. For decades, Ms. Horton poured herself into church, education, and community, including her longtime service at Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she founded its Feeding Ministry and remained active in numerous ministries. She also served the broader community through organizations and institutions including the Garfield High School Community Coalition, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Seattle Vocational Institute. Her life was truly one of service, faith, and generosity.
We feel especially grateful that Ms. Horton was able to join us at our most recent Legacy in Motion Fundraising Gala, celebrating alongside the community she had supported for so many years. The very next day, we were blessed to see her again at Mount Zion, the church home where she was such a committed and integral presence.
Byrd Barr Place will deeply feel the void of not having Ms. Horton with us. We will miss her presence, her encouragement, and the opportunity to continue gleaning from the wisdom she so generously shared.
Her legacy reminds us that community is built by people who consistently show up, care for others, and give of themselves without needing recognition in return. Ms. Horton did that for decades, and Byrd Barr Place is stronger because she was part of our story.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, her Mount Zion church family, her friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known and loved her.
Rest well, Ms. Horton. Thank you for believing in us, growing with us, and loving this community so faithfully. You will be dearly missed, but your legacy of service will remain with us always.

At Byrd Barr Place, the Building Bridges Candidate Forum brought community members and candidates together for meaningful conversations about the issues and priorities that matter to Seattle. Fall is better when we celebrate together! Join us at Byrd Barr Place on Saturday, October 31, for an afternoon filled with seasonal activities, family fun, and opportunities to connect with our community.

Get creative with pumpkin decorating, bounce and play in the bouncy house, and explore Tent or Treat, where decorated tents bring seasonal surprises and goodies for everyone to enjoy. Families can also take part in apple c***r pressing, show off their costumes in the costume contest, and enjoy free food throughout the event. Whether you're coming for the activities, the treats, or simply the chance to spend time together, there's something to make the afternoon memorable.

Education opens doors to new possibilities, and the right support can help students take their next step.

The Seattle Seahawks Community Scholarship is now accepting applications for 2026. Eligible Washington high school seniors graduating in 2027 may receive up to $10,000 toward tuition or other educational expenses at an eligible college, university, or accredited technical or vocational program.
