Help shape the future of community funding in Skyway and White Center! Apply to join the Community Advisory Board and help design the 2026 Participatory Grantmaking process 📢

Exciting news for folks on Vashon and Maury Island!

King County Parks will host a community celebration Saturday to celebrate the restored Dockton Park and Marina on Vashon, completing a multi-year project that modernized the aging facility with safer, more durable and environmentally friendly infrastructure while improving shoreline access.

The project replaced the floating dock, breakwater, finger piers, and pilings, improved moorage facilities such as upgraded utilities, fire suppression system, sewage pump out station, installed a new swim dock constructed with plastic grating that lets light through and creates better habitat for sea life, and included structural and safety improvements.

We’re just about two weeks out from the start of the Fifteen Mile Creek Bridge Replacement Project! Construction is expected to begin on Monday, June 15 at 7 am, and will require a 24/7 full road closure of SE May Valley Road between Issaquah-Hobart Rd SE and 233rd Ave SE. All travelers including pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency services, will follow the marked detour route*.

Before the full closure begins, crews will reduce the bridge to a single lane each weekday from Tuesday, June 2, to Friday, June 12, from 7 am to 6 pm to prepare the site for the 24/7 closure and bridge replacement.

*Please note: The City of Issaquah’s streets are not suitable for freight. Truck traffic must use the designated truck routes highlighted in yellow.

Here is an AMAZING feature on another effort in Skyway that was made possible by Participatory Budgeting.

Converge Media recently highlighted the Cutting Edge Barber Mentorship Program, an initiative that community chose to direct $125,000 through the King County program in 2024.

Converge interviewed several of individuals involved with this six-week, four-days-a-week mentorship program, specifically Personal Touch Barbershop and Life's Styles Barber Academy.

Here's an excerpt:

What makes the Cutting Edge program uniquely impactful is its strategic alliance of prominent local organizations. The initiative operates as a collaborative ecosystem, combining the community reach of Personal Touch Barbershop and the accredited educational framework of Life's Styles Barber Academy (led by master barber and owner Lamont Styles).

For Lamont Styles, a serial entrepreneur and instructor, backing this program means reclaiming the historic role of the barbershop as an anchor of social infrastructure.

"It's the cornerstone, man, next to the church," Styles shared. "Everybody comes through the barbershop, and so we feel like if we can unite the barbershop in the Black community, we could really, really push a lot of different programs and resources through that."

Here's an excerpt of Participatory Budgeting's impact:

The Participatory Budgeting funding proved vital, arriving precisely as local stylists and barbers were navigating a traditionally slow economic season. The grant money was directly injected back into the neighborhood to:

- Purchase comprehensive professional tools and supplies for the students.

- Fund fair compensation for the specialized instructors and mentors.

- Distribute financial stipends directly to the participating youth.

- Assist with the shop's building lease and operational rentals.

While nearly 30 students initially walked through the doors on day one, a core group of 19 dedicated individuals consistently showed up every single day, demonstrating an unyielding desire to master the craft and escape the distractions of the streets.

As the soccer world descends on the Pacific Northwest next month, King County Department of Local Services and White Center Pride Committee are teaming up to bring together community to celebrate in a way that’s uniquely White Center.

On Friday, June 26, they will hold a free community watch party and festival called “Gather for Goals” along 16th Avenue SW in the heart of White Center.

The watch party is a chance for community members to enjoy the world’s largest soccer competition without leaving their community or venturing into the neighboring host city.

It’s also a chance to remind the world that White Center respects and appreciates people of all backgrounds.

Between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., matches from the world’s largest soccer competition will be shown on one of five giant screens along a three-block stretch of 16th Avenue SW, starting north just past SW Roxbury Street and extending south to SW 100th Street.

The matches taking place on June 26 that will be shown include Norway vs. France; Senegal vs. Iraq; Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia; and Uruguay vs. Spain.
