Sitka Tribe of Alaska is grieved to learn of the passing of Joel Jackson and extend our support and condolences to his family, clan, and community. Joel was Tlingit, Yeil, Kaach.ádi. He was also Sgwaayaans (Haida), Tsiits Git’anee of G̱aw Tlagée (Masset Haida Gwaii). He was a lifelong resident of Ḵéex̱’ Ḵwáan.

Joel's work and years of dedication to his Tribe and the people of his community will reverberate for years to come. His tireless work as an individual and as the President of the Organized Villiage of Kake addressed many important issues such as protecting the Roadless Rule, securing special community harvests during COVID, and the creation of a cultural healing center in Portage Bay (https://www.ourlifewaysheal.org/).
