Established in 2001 by two local nurses and a committed group of community members, BHV sought to address gaps in health care services, specifically in hospice and palliative care. Initial meetings brought together representatives of civic- and service-related organizations, health care providers, faith groups, and interested individuals. In 2004 we received our Tlingit name, Yee gu.aa yax x'wan which means "Be of Brave Heart." The name reflects the strong connection we hold with our care-receivers, partners, and community as we are called upon to be brave in the face of health challenges and even death. No Charge for Assistance
All our services are offered free of charge. Our year-round program services continue to be offered community wide because of regular donations from caring supporters like you! One of the unique aspects of Brave Heart Volunteers is our collective belief in the power of working together for a common purpose. The spirit of love and compassion, and the shared goal of helping our neighbors, strengthens and benefits the whole community. Brave Heart Volunteers seek to serve those who could benefit from friendly visiting, companionship, simple home help, or family respite support. We also offer education and group support for family caregivers and those grieving the loss of a loved one. There are no fees for services, nor income restrictions. We are happy to serve people of every of race, color, lifestyle and creed. Volunteers are community members who wish to lend a helping hand to others. Many are connected to local service groups, civic groups, faith groups, or health organizations. Volunteers range in age from 21 years old to 90 years old! Brave Heart Volunteers are often people who have a sense that they would like to give back after receiving something positive from others in their lives. There is a wide range of ways to be involved with Brave Heart Volunteers. Aside from home visiting, volunteer opportunities also include: office help, serving on our board, or helping out at fundraising events. All volunteers are screened and receive orientation, training and support.
